I woke up this morning the first day in about a week without coughing up a lung or waking up while coughing up a lung. I could breath through my nose. I got up without a coughing fit and actually felt almost normal. There was some coughing once I was up but it was not that bad.

I went on Facebook and the first thing I saw was Toby Froud’s post about the passing of David Bowie. It was simple. A picture of Toby from Labyrinth sitting in David Bowie’s lap captioned “so sorry to hear about David Bowie”. The next post was from Mike Quinn about working with Bowie on Labyrinth which he starts with “after making sure it was not a hoax.” And I knew that the Thin White Duke had shuffled off this mortal coil.

It is hard to summarize David Bowie because he defied being put into a box and labeled. He re-invented himself or his public self over and over challenging people to see the similar in differences. He spoke to the other inside us and told us it was OK to be different to be ourselves within a world that might not understand us.

The Man who fell to Earth was my first “x” rated film that I saw.

He and Iman will always be one of my New York City moments. It was the kind of a spring day that you live for and I was walking with a friend to get lunch. We were walking along and coming towards us was David Bowie and Iman hand and hand. We gave the New York Nod to them as in "we recognize your greatness" and they returned it with a smile as in "thank you" and we went our ways.

He released a new album on his birthday this year. We didn't know this was his good-bye to us at the time but listening to it now I can see that it is.

Good-bye and God Speed to Ziggie Stardust and the myriad of other characters he brought to life.

My sympathies to his family and friends.

I am grateful that I did have the NYC moment.
