Australia 2009 Day 3
Oct. 17th, 2009 04:12 pmIn which we actually attend the convention which was very nice.
One of the biggest differences for me when attending a convention in another country is that you tend to make friends pretty fast with the others from your country that are there on the conventions dime as well. When you go to a country where you don’t speak the language very well, if at all, your fellow country men can talk to you in your own language. Where they do speak English, there is just some common ground (like the plane trip to get over here) that gives you a topic that you can talk about with each other.
Also a number of the media guest we have done other convention with and hung with them at those convention so they know we are alright and we know they are alright. We met the convention staff who are top notch and able to take care of any concern with a quick “No Worries” and then get you a solution. I can highly recommend Armageddon Expo to anyone who gets invited to it. Just plan for the plane trip because it’s a right bastard.
Caroline had fun walking around the floor of the convention. She loved watching the wrestling matches that they had going on the main floor. She cheered for the baby-faces and booed the villains. There was one big bruiser called the Reaper (think a slightly shorter Gravedigger) that she really didn’t like because he was mean to the other wrestlers. Later we were walking by the table and the Reaper was standing behind the table looking menacing while some of the baby-faces were signing autographs. Caroline said, “Look! It’s the wrestlers!” and then she pointed at the Reaper and said, rather audibly, “He’s a big meanie.” The Reaper turns and growled at Caroline who, I think, surprised us all by screwing up her angry face and snarling back at him. Not the reaction I think he was expecting but it cracked him up along with the rest of the table. I think she felt good that she stood up to a bully.
The guests have been great with Caroline. Asking her what her age is and what she has been doing at the convention. A couple of them who knew her when she was younger were amazed how big she had gotten in such a short time. She has also met some of the younger actors here who I think she is a little more comfortable with than the adult actors.

I have been having fun too. Peter came back from the convention and Caroline was taking a nap so he told me to go off and explore. I went downstairs and ran into a couple of the con staff and told them I was going out to explore a bit. “Ah,” says one of the guys, “So you are off on a walkabout. Good on you.” The Aussies are a very relaxed people. They remind me of Southerners in many ways including the don’t hurry attitude. It happens when it happens.
I am grateful that Caroline had such a good time at the convention.
