Thanksgivings 2006 Day 2
Nov. 21st, 2006 10:50 amSFWA Mill & Swill
I have been going to the Mill and Swill which is the Science Fiction Writers of America holiday party since Peter and I started dating. It has been held in a variety of places but for the past couple of years it has been held at the Society of Illustrators which always has amazing art to look at. The time of year that we go there is an exhibit of art from children's books and it is fascinating to look at the variety of the art and the stories that can be told in one panel without the dialogue.
This year both Peter and I went. We had dinner with Bob Greenberg and Greg Cox at a very nice Indian restaurant since where Greg lives there are not many (try none) of them and he was jonesing for some good spicy food. We then went to the party which was in full swing. I ran into most of the people I wanted to talk to and a few surprises. I had a nice conversation with Holly Black about her adventures on the Spiderwick set. I ran into some of my old colleagues from Del Rey. I had a short chat with Chris Clairmont who is looking very good. I caught a number of my friends up on Caroline and her adventures. All in all I had a pretty good time until there were too many people in too small a space. It got to the point that I had to read lips to hear conversations due to all the ambient noise. And drinks were being spilled on people backs by accident with too much frequency for my taste. So Peter and I said our good-byes and came home just in time to listen to a train horn that got stuck so the train couldn't move because the safety kicked on because something was wrong with the train. We watched Heroes and went to bed.
What I am thankful for the 2006 edition
I am thankful for Caroline's Kermit Quilt. Yesterday I talked about Pink Blankie which is Caroline's constant companion but at night before she goes to sleep she insists on being covered by a quilt that was made by my longest friend. Mary Aileen made the quilt for Caroline as a baby shower present. It was based on a patter n from a book I got her for Christmas one year about Muppet Quilts. She is an amazing quilter and stuffed animal maker. There is a picture of the quilt on her website http://www.themousehole.org/. I started covering her with the quilt when we turned her crib into a toddler bed and now it is part of our bedtime ritual.
I am thankful for recycling days. I consider how much garbage we would be throwing out if they didn't pick up the paper and plastic and it is rather scary. Paper along would be a trashcan a week between all the different forms of paper that come into this house. Plastics and metal less so since we stopped drinking soda for the most part.
I am thankful for the Disney Corporation. Yeah we're a Disney household and we buy into the Magic of Disney. We believe as they say but after this summers encounter with all the Disney Princesses at Disney World I believe more in Disney Magic and the special smile it can bring to a child's face. Along with that I am thankful for our buddies who work for various parts of the Corporation.
I am thankful for good neighbors who look out for each other.
I am thankful for all the creative things I got to do this year. It has been a pretty creative year with costumes, dolls, puppets, and masks made for various reasons. I have learned new skills and refined a few old ones. I have pushed myself as an artist by putting stuff in Art Shows and joining swaps and Challenges over the year. I hope to continue this trend into the next year and beyond.
I am grateful for all I have to be thankful for.
