Giving Thanks the 2006 Edition Day 1
Nov. 20th, 2006 11:02 amWoke up with one heck of a headache. Managed to get it down to a dull roar and I am hoping that the caffeine will be the last piece of the puzzle to get ride of it entirely.
This is the week that I give thanks for things and reflect a bit over the year before diving into the holiday season. We are less than two weeks from Caroline's Birthday and as of tomorrow we are exactly two weeks away from her actual birthday. So I have to get the house in shape for company again. This evening Peter and I are going off to the SFWA party to Mill and Swill, as the party is called. It will be nice to see our colleagues. Some of these people I only see one as year in person but talk to online a lot. We're going to go out to dinner with our buddy Bob Greenburger before the official party. So I need to get some more photo paper to print up some photos for everyone who is going to ask what Caroline looks like. I want to find Ariel's bowling picture as well from her team last year.
I am thankful for the weather so far this year. Overall it has been very comfortable. The summer was warm but not unbearably hot, well at least not when we were in town. We actually had spring rather than going from winter to summer which we had done in previous years. I could take Caroline out to the playground yesterday and let her run around and we are more than half way through the month. The weather is changing for the colder over the next couple of days but still not putting us in a deep freeze. I don't think Caroline is going to get snow on her birthday which she has had the previous 4 years.
I am thankful that we have cats. Fuzzy pains that they can be, they are good cats. Also it is easier to find a cat sitter than a dog sitter. Cats don't need to be walked which is nice. They all get along with Caroline and come to see her and me for morning head scratches. The two grey cats amuse us with their antics. Stalin, the black and while Heminway cat, is the old man of the group. He tends to sit high and look upon his youngers with distain. All three love chasing the laser pointer but Stalin will only do it if the other two aren't around. Each has his distinctive personality. Millie is the sneaky one who follows me around if I let him. He is also really fast and gotten past me before I could blink. Vanillie is the one that likes to play with Caroline (the other two tolerate her) and he will come over and flop next to her when she is playing watching what she is doing and bumping her hand occationally for an absentminded pat. Stalin use to sit on my lap all the time until Caroline kicked him while she was in-utero now he likes to curl up on the couch next to my shoulder.
I am thankful for my user groups. Some of these people I have met and some I have only known online but they have all made my life more interesting. I like being able to go to my brain trusts and get information that I need. I also like being part of the brain trusts and able to solve someone's problem so they don' t have to re-invent the wheel again.
I am thankful for my various web logs and webpages. I have a couple web logs. I have my main one which is http://kathodavid.malibulist.com/ that I try to post to once a day. I got a live journal account (Puppetmaker40) so I could read others journals and I reprint what I do on my main blog there for the convenience of my friends there. Thanks to Kit (Thanks Kit!) I have a vox journal that I am making for my puppetry work only. It is at http://kaththepuppeteer.vox.com/. I'm Kath the Puppeteer on that system. That blog is for more my nuts and bolts and how I do it. Then there is my photo page at mac.com that someday I am going to work out how to sort it out. That is where I put not only my professional stuff but the family photos for all to see.
I am thankful for my bowling team. I am in a league on Monday and it is such a nice group of women. It gives me a night away from being Mom and a bunch of other women to talk to about all kinds of things. My teammates are great and I love talking to them. We dressed up as Fairies this Halloween and are already trying to figure out what we are going to do next year. We exchange holiday gifts and remember each other on our birthdays. Nice social group with bowling as a bonus.
I am thankful for Caroline's Pink Blankie. Pink Blankie was a baby gift by Susan and Harlan Ellison to Caroline. It is well worn and much loved by Caroline. She has to have it before she goes to sleep and she keeps it near her during the day. It is getting a bit ragged. I have to tie up sections that are starting to unravel but I really don't know what we would do without it. She uses it to make herself and others feel better through its magic powers. She uses it to put her stuff animals asleep and on us when she feels we could use a nap too. It is her security blanket and makes all our lives a little easier.
I am grateful to have so much to be thankful for.
