Roads look much better this morning. The sun is out and the thawing has begun. It is still bitter cold and the winds while diminished have not stopped.

This morning I came down to find all three of our cats draped on the couch and table sunning themselves. I don't think they could have looked any lazier or more content. They were stretched out as long as they could be. There are days I wish I could be a cat.

The usual a lot to do and a little time to do it in.

I have discovered that since I became a Mom, I have a lot less tolerance to read about children hurt or in danger or killed. Here in New York a little girl has died and there is a lot of finger pointing and a million retellings of her sad short life and brutal death at the hands of her stepfather. Everyone who had anything to do with it has told their side of the story and each ends with I wish I could have done more. Out of the lot there is only one social worker who can really hold her head high because she DID try to do everything short of breaking the laws she swore to uphold but due to those laws and paperwork a child has died. Today one of the New York papers has an interview with the mother who went to bed while her husband killed her daughter. The stepfather has declared that the girl was a handful and disobedient so he had to discipline her. Her other brothers and sisters were not treated the way she was. They always talk about signals and signs before these sorts of tragedies happen. There were plenty here but some went ignored and others were not attended to promptly. I find myself wondering how anyone could let that happen to a child and then think about the number of times I have looked away as a parent smacks their child in frustration or anger in a public place.

I am grateful for all the children who do get out of these sorts of situations.
