Monday Sports Update
Sep. 26th, 2005 03:40 pmSo the Yanks and the Soxs are tied for first and the magic number for both is something really screwy. We may be looking at a winner-takes-all play-off between these two teams for a spot in Baseball's Octoberfest. I'll admit it, the Yankees surprised me this year. They went from sucking to playing decent to playing very well. As long as they don't hit another one of their slumps, they will at least make it to the play-offs. I don't think they are going to go all the way this year. The competition is really stiff with or without the Soxs.
I said at the beginning of the season and I will say at the end of the season, I'll be happy if the Mets stay above 500. They are mathematically out of it and are playing not to be in last place right now. Willie Randolph has done a wonderful job getting them there. He had to take a team that has a few players being paid too much for too little and molded them back into a team. Pitching was very good this year. More games were lost on bad fielding rather than pitching. So a few more position players and I think the Mets are back in it.
Braves are probably going to win the division but do they have the staying power for the play-off? When their bats are hot, they seem unstoppable but when their bats are cool, like the Mets, pitching can only get you so far. The Braves do have good closers and that may be enough to finish up the season on top.
The Jets.....What can I say that I didn't say two weeks ago. The Jets have an awesome defense. I was amazed at all they did that game. But what the hella was Herm Edwards thinking putting Chad BACK out there after he pulled him for an injured shoulder? They went through two quarterbacks and have nothing to show for it. It was theirs to loose and loose they did. The Giants had a bump in the road. Sure it was big enough to take out the undercarriage of a Hummer but still I think this team has a lot going for it. The Chargers were pumped for this game and showed it on the field and in the stands.
Speaking of football, it seems that the usual suspects are at the top of the standings in the English League and the bottom looks pretty much like it has the past couple of years. Although Arsenal is doing better than I thought they would at the beginning of the season. I am following West Ham much closer than I have before. I have really taken a shine to them. I am in good company with Elijah Wood and Kira Knightly.
Basketball......Is there basketball? Oh there is it. I haven't heard boo about it. Oh the season is starting in less than 2 week? Really? Imagine that.
Hockey, all I know right now is that there is a season. I have to admit that Hockey is not among my favorite sport.
I am grateful that the Braves did well this year.
