May. 31st, 2005 08:49 amApparently there is a bill on the Connecticut Governor’s desk to remove junk food and sodas from vending machines on school property. There is also a section that calls for all kids kindergarten through 5 grades to have an addition 20 minutes of physical activity besides gym (I think that is called recess) which there has been a howl for protest by the teachers union because they have so much they already have to cram into a day to get the kids ready for endless tests which really prove nothing but that we are raising a generation of test takers.
The schools get money for the vending machines in the schools that they use for things that have been cut from the budget like new football uniforms. A number of students are chuffed that the vending machines will no longer be serving junk food. They wonder how junk food made it into the school anyway. Personally they want the cafeteria to offer more choices of healthy foods on the menu. There are other students who are very unhappy about the situation. They content that this takes away from their rights and freedoms. A right to junk food? What are they teaching in civics class these days? Oh right, there are no civics classes now I think they call it social science.
In my high school there was one Coke Machine. It was in the teacher’s lounge which was a mysterious area that few had seen. I do remember when they added a chef salad as a choice for lunch instead of whatever they were serving. If you wanted junk food, you brought it from home. In college there were vending machines in just about every building and I did on occasion make a bag of chips and a coke my lunch. There was also a snack counter in the AMUC that had a handy selection of both good and bad foods. But by that point I was making my food decisions for good or bad. I don’t think vending machines have a place in public schools.
Caroline had a very busy day yesterday. She ran around the yard for about an hour then rode in her stroller to the parade. She liked watching the parade. She came home and took a nap. After her nap we took her to the playground which is by the water. The wind was more than we were expecting but she still had fun. We then all went bowling. She takes a 6 pound ball, gets a running start, and flings the ball down the lane. The ball then rolls slowly to the pins and knocks them down. We have her on the bumper lanes so she will usually get some sort of pin count. At one point her score was better than mine. She came home and had a large dinner for her. She proceeded to watch Monsters Inc and almost fall asleep. When her movie was over Peter and I took her into her room changed her clothes and diaper and put her to bed. She slept pretty well and got up when she heard my alarm clock go off.
I did get through over 1000 e-mails and newsgroup messages so I feel caught up. A couple of things that I needed to tend to showed up in the messages. I still haven’t heard about the job but if they are giving each candidate a week to respond, it might be a while. I know I did my best so either way I don’t feel bad about this one. Today I want to tackle the kitchen closet, take Caroline to Mommy and Me, and find my ironing board which is currently under a stack of paper.
I am grateful for corn on the cob.
