Dance Dance Revolution
Feb. 22nd, 2005 08:42 amDance Dance Revolution or DDR is a video game where you try to match your dance moves to the ones on the game screen to various types of music. The first time I saw the game I was in Italy with Peter at a really great Star Trek convention. We had found out shortly before we went that I was pregnant with Caroline. We were walking to a restaurant that had been recommended to us by the con committee and passed a Video Arcade where DDR was at the front of the room. We stopped and watched two young ladies play the game in earnest. They were using the grips to keep upright as they danced faster and faster with their friends cheering them on.
Fast forward to Farpoint last year and in the game room there was Playstation set up with the DDR pads attached to it. Ariel and her gang played DDR as long as we would let them. It was the place to be if you were a teen that weekend. Caroline was one and happy to watch the kids dancing from the comfort of her stroller.
Farpoint this year found Caroline now participating in the game by hopping up and down on the pad. She loved it and she loved playing with the big kids especially her big sister Ariel.
Yesterday, Peter was going through the downstairs closet looking for his hiking books to go shovel the front walk. He pulled out one of Ariel’s DDR pads from the closet. Caroline, who had been gunning for the pad since we got back from the convention and she saw it in the closet, grabbed the pad and started to unfold it in front of the Playstation. She said, “Dance! Dance!” She came and started pulling on my pants leg trying to get me to stand up. I figured out what she wanted. I found the game, plugged in the game pad, and turned on the Playstation. I put it to workout mode since then she could bounce her way through a song without it being cut off because she was not jumping on the right arrow. She bounced through a number of songs and then went off to play with something else. I turned off the Playstation but most of the day she would sit on the pad and play with her toys.
Yesterday evening, she insisted on playing DDR again but this time she wanted someone to play along with her. So Caroline and I danced for about 40 minutes to various tunes including Duran Duran and some techno I had heard and liked before but never knew the name of. She was having a blast. It really helped her burn off the baby calories and she slept through the night without a problem.
I am grateful for video games that allow you to exercise and have fun.
