Yesterday I laughed so hard that by the end my sides hurt. It was nothing that Caroline did although she can make me laugh with her antics very easily. Peter and I went into the city to have a nice dinner with some friends and see the Broadway Musical Spamalot which is billed as “A new musical (loving) ripped off from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”

I am a big Monty Python fan and an even bigger fan of their movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I have lost count the number of times I have seen it on the big screen and the small screen. There are large chunks of dialogue lodged in my brain. If given a cue line I tend to give the next line of dialogue. There are certain lines that enter into my every day conversation more so if I am at a convention. “Run Away!” “I’m not dead yet!” and “Your father was a hamster and your mother smelt of elderberries. Now go away before I taunt you a second time” to name a few. Yes, all the above lines are in the play.

We first heard about this play in the magazine Variety as a small article about since The Producers had been such a success others were trying to make movies into plays including Eric Idle who was working on a musical of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” I thought well that could be interesting. The next article, again in Variety, said that Tim Curry was playing King Arthur and David Hyde Pierce had signed on. At that point Peter and I promised each other that if this made it to Broadway, we were going to see it. Then Hank Azaria joined the cast list and the anticipation grew.

Our buddy Glenn got a block of tickets for a bunch of us when they went on sale. So last night found me sitting in Q104 at the Shubert Theatre dizzy with anticipation. I was not disappointed. This is not a politically correct show in any shape or form. If you are easily offended this is not the show for you but I believe they are doing Little Women: the Musical just down the street. If you can’t stand the movie on which the play is based, then run away!

But if you are into all things Python and can quote the Holy Grail backward and forwards, this is the show for you. Tim Curry is great as Arthur, King of the Britons. (King of the Who?) David Hyde Pierce and Hank Azaria, like the movie, serve double duty and more in several roles. Pierce plays Sir Robin and has a show stopping song in the middle of Act 2. Hank Azaria is Sir Lancelot among others and the end of the Prince Herbert scene is rather different than the movie. The script comments on things both topical and universal especially all things Broadway. I really don’t want to give away some of the better gags that they do since I have been accused of being a spoiler and I really wouldn’t want to spoil it for you.

So it gets two thumbs up when I can get them away from holding my sides in from laughing so hard.

Afterwards Peter managed to get Mr. Curry, Mr. Pierce, and Mr. Azaria to sign the mouth of our very large killer bunny. Mr. Curry seems a little dubious about doing so until Peter promised not to have it bite down on his hand. Mr. Pierce and Mr. Azaria, seeing that Mr. Curry was so brave by putting his hand in the rabbit’s mouth, followed suit. I have pictures and will be putting them up probably sometime today along with some pictures for Ariel that I promised her.

I am grateful I got to see this musical with the original cast.
