puppetmakerI have been rather busy for the past week and haven’t really had time or the energy or the means to write up all the stuff that has been going on.
I have been writing and rewriting this entry in my head for a while now. I have been adding and subtracting what I am going to say.
I am putting this behind a cut because this is gonna be long.
I am defiantly on West Coast time. That will flip back when Caroline gets back here, which will be Sunday. She is having a great time with her eldest sister and her material grandparents and her cousin. She had learned how to body board and has been riding waves into the beach. I did the same thing when I was her age. We did all agree that we missed each other very much and are looking forward to seeing each other.
The trip out was early. We had to get up at 3:30 AM to make sure we would make it to the airport on time and through the security check since parts of JFK are rather difficult to navigate. As it was, we managed to get to the gate an hour before boarding so went to the Delta Club and vegged until boarding. The flight was uneventful. We were on one of the new planes that every seat had an entertainment center so we could choose what we wanted to watch. I finally saw the Incredible Burt Wonderstone which was a delightful movie. Peter watched that and then fell asleep while watching the Hobbit. I watched my way through a couple of films I had seen before but didn’t nap at all.
The drive from LA to San Diego was traffic choked because of stock car races down in Del Mar. Lots of RVs and trailers were on their way down for a weekend of fun. The side roads weren’t an option either since they were more choked than the highway. So we added about an hour and half to our trip right there. Still it was better than last year.
Got checked in and then went out to lunch at one of Peter’s favorite places to eat. On the way back we ran into Scott Porter and caught up on news. That’s how SDCC rolls. We stand just as good a chance of running into friends on the street as the floor.
Got our badges after a staff member took pity on us and got us to the help line for professional badges because Peter really can’t stand in a line for more than half an hour at this point. Right now standing still is worse than walking for him. She could see that he was running out of spoons. So thank you young lady for your help.
We got on the floor and started to do our rounds and figure out where things were. I was proud of Peter than he managed to navigate the whole convention. I would like to thank all our friends who gave him a place to sit and rest when he needed it. Y’all just rawk.
It is getting to the point that at the SDCC you have to stand in a line to get a ticket to go stand in another line to buy or see something. So getting the exclusives can be a royal pain. Caroline had one thing that she wanted from this convention and it was a Monster High Doll which was priced at the price point of all the other Monster High Dolls. Matty Collector was selling them. This year if you were a professional, you couldn’t get in line until an hour after the floor opened by which time that doll was sold out. People were paying people to stand in line for them and get them multiple copies of this doll. No luck Wednesday or Thursday so Friday I had an early in to help set up something for a retail friend. I did what they needed me to do and went to get into the line for Matty Collector and it was already cut off. Now how those people got in early was a mystery. Also I was informed because my badge said professional, I couldn’t even attempt the line until 10:30. So there was no way to get this doll. I went and found a young woman who was answering questions and told her about Caroline and how she wanted this doll out of everything on the floor. She said her hands were tied but if I went to the Mattel booth they might be able to help me. I went to the Mattel booth and found another young woman who was working the WWE part of the booth. She introduced me to the head of the Monster High part of the booth because she thought Caroline was cute and she loved Jaden Smith. I had shown her the picture on the face of my iPhone which is Caroline and Jaden at the After Earth party. The MH person listen very patiently to my story and had me come with her and another lady who had her daughter with her who was Caroline’s age. She magically made the dolls appear because she knew that these were going to be opened and played with by two girls who are monster high fans rather than running around the market from collector to collector. We paid our money and thanked her and our lucky stars for the opportunity.
We also lucked into a Hasbro ticket and helped another convention goer. ‘Becca had come up from Australia to go to SDCC. It was her vacation for pretty much the year. She had gotten up at 3 AM to stand in line for a ticket to buy stuff at the Hasbro booth at 4 PM which tells you how early some people were getting up to go to the ticket line. She was on her way to the booth and had her ticket under her phone. She turned to check her purse and someone grabbed the ticket from under her phone and ran. So she lost her chance to get her friends something that they really wanted that she wanted to surprise them with. We helped her out and got her the stuff that she wanted to get for her friends since it wasn’t what we were there for. She was so very grateful to us for helping her. We restored her belief that fans were good people and looked after each other. It was nice to play it forward for the people who helped me get that one doll for Caroline.
When I was younger, I read a lot of comics. I remember enjoying the work of various artists and writers and wondered what it would be like to have these people as friends. I had fun watching various TV shows and wondered what it would be like to hang out with the actors and writers of the shows. It was just something that I thought would be cool to do.
Flash forward to now (or rather last week) and as I am talking to my friends who are writers, artists, actors, and the like, my mind inside was going ‘this is sooo cool.’ I got a chance to tell Samuel L. Jackson that he had the Baddest Voice in the Planet (in a good way). I got to tell Sebastian Stan that Caroline thought that his character on Once Upon a Time was a really good daddy, which he appreciated. I sat down and had a long talk with Bill Sienkiewicz about various things. I got hugs from George Perez and Marv Wolfman among many others. I got to spend sometime talking to various actors I have met on the convention circuit. I was talking to Scott when his husband John came up behind me and gave me a hug before the two of them had to wander off to dinner. I had breakfast with Paul Cornell, Mark Buckingham and Irma Page, which was delightful. I spent the Randomhouse party sitting with George RR Martin, Caroline Spector, and Warner Spector. I got to talk to Terry and Judine Brooks, which is always a pleasure. I knew Neil was there and he knew we were there but our paths just never crossed.
The convention wrapped up for us by 1:30 on Sunday and we headed for Disneyland. The drive was an hour longer than it should have been but we got there in plenty of time to go the Magic Kingdom and we rode our favorite rides there which the exception of Roger Rabbit because of the fireworks. We saw the fireworks and got back to our hotel. We made the decision after having to burn both ends of the candle for four days to sleep until we woke up rather than force ourselves up early for magic hours. We played around California Adventure and had lunch at Ariel’s grotto. The sad thing was that the lines at Disneyland were much shorter than the ones at SDCC.
After that we went and visited the Ellisons and had great food and even better conversation. Then back to the airport and the red-eye home.
But that was not the end of our adventures for the week. More tomorrow.
