Why the Bachelor rubs me the wrong way this time around

At my bowling league on Monday nights there are a set of TVs over the bowling area. On Monday night in our area they are tuned to ABC because we enjoy Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune while we bowl. They stay tuned to ABC because a number of the ladies like “Dancing with the Stars” and “the Bachelor” which seem to alternate on Mondays at 8 o’clock.

This past Monday was the beginning of the next season of the Bachelor, which is a show I don’t care for very much because the premise rubs me the wrong way for many reasons, which I will not get into. They were introducing the potential mates to the Bachelor, who has some tragic story of his own that took place on the Bachelorette I believe, and as they were introducing them they were giving some basic stats as to where they were from and what they did. Model caused me to snort my ginger ale a little because I added the word lingerie to it rather quickly. But one sort of bothered me and it shouldn’t have. One of the ladies was listed at Blogger. So now I have a job title to add to my list of things I have done?

I went to look at her blog and at the time I was not impressed. Now it is under construction probably because of this past Monday and her uptick in traffic. So in one show she has probably increased her web footprint by quite a bit. But how long will it last? And considering her behavior during that first hour, why is she even there if she is that much of an emotional mess?

Think about it I could call myself an International Blogger since I know my blog is read in a number of different countries. I don’t have the world’s biggest readership but it is pretty consistent. I tend to have a bit of an uptick with New Who Review and Crafty Tuesday but overall my numbers aren’t too bad.

I know a couple of people who make a decent living off of their blogs and some that have parlayed their blogs into careers. But I don’t think that going on the Bachelor is the way to financial independence and honestly it makes some of the rest of us look cheap and tawdry but I am betting there are lots of cheap and tawdry bloggers out there that make her look good. And I hope she gets what she needs out of this show but she isn’t making bloggers look real good/sane.

I feel exactly the same about the show - I have to say that I have never willingly watched it, only catching bits of it when in the vicinity of someone who does. IMO, it ranks down there with the whole "I'm empowering myself by posing nude" thing...

Yep. Now people are auditioning for the show assuming that they will be kicked off but they might have a change at fame that will let them come back or be "discovered"

Sad really. I wonder how many have self esteem issues before the show and after the show.

I don't like the show, hate the premise. However, this year's advertising is more grating than usual - they brush over his "tragedy" of being publically embarressed (oh! the horror!) and yet one ad.... consists of nothing but one of the women crying. And crying. And crying. It's hideous! "Watch our show and enjoy the view of women sobbing their hearts out"? Just ew.

Neither did I. Like I stated in the entry, I do know a handful of people who turned what they did on their web log into a full time career but it is very hard to do.
