puppetmakerI will be starting the Doctor Who portion of my NWR tomorrow and catching up over the next couple of days. Tuesday will be Crafty Tuesday.

Yes, it had its problems but in the end I was entertained and that’s all you can really ask of a TV show.
Pacing was a problem. Peter and I sorted out that it could have been done 6 episodes if they tossed out the filler and the sloppy intro to Torchwood. 4 if they really wanted to condense it.
Yes, they did have to introduce the new audience to Torchwood, but did they really do that? We can’t tell since we have been watching since the beginning. They had elements and talked about the past but not really what Torchwood was.
Acting was solid over all. I don’t have any complaints about the casting.
My biggest complaints were dropped threads and shifting villains. More on that after the cut.
Would I watch another series of Torchwood? Yeah, I still love Gwen and Jack and their interaction.
I am grateful this series got made even with my reservations about it.
If Jack keeps insisting that it isn’t his blood and it turns out to be (in this case) his blood then I call a slight foul. That was one of the plot points which doesn’t work for me no matter how many times I try to figure it out. Also remember that Jack has descendants and it was stated again in this series so his genetic material is out there in the human population with little to no effect. It is bad story telling.
I really thought that the Null Field was going to play a bigger part in this but it seemed forgotten. Also Peter and I are still having a debate about how Angelo knew that Jack was there. I say that he wasn’t going to die until he kissed Jack again.
Oswald Danes was not redeemed. He didn’t change. He was just bloody good at concealing the monster with in but not totally. Gwen had his number the whole time. I honestly think that the writers created the character and didn’t know what to do with him. The Danes subplot could have been taken out and it honestly wouldn’t make a difference. He didn’t work as a POV character which they tried to do with him later. The actor did a great job with what he was given but that wasn’t much.
And there is Jilly, the actress did an amazing job with what she was given so kudos to Lauren Ambrose for a killer performance but like Oswald, she could have been cut from the series and I wouldn’t have missed the character since she did next to nothing to forward the plot.
I figure out the minute that Rex said he had Jack’s blood within that Rex was going to pull a Jack and that was how they were going to keep him around. Esther and Vera were the token bodies this year. I had more invested in Esther but I could see it coming. It was going to be Rex or her and when she got shot, I figured Rex would make it through.
So for me the series came down to Gwen trying to balance work and family and Jack who was the center lynchpin for the whole mystery. I enjoyed them a lot and scenes with them felt right. I did like that Rhys figured out one of the more important clues they needed to conclude the show.
I still am not sure what the blessing was or how Jack’s blood effected it.
Again I would watch another Torchwood if Jack and Gwen are in it but I want old style Torchwood rather than this overblown epic that didn’t make much sense.

Then, others convinced Rusty to change it but now it's like he changed his mind and it IS in his blood but Alice and all his children and descendents weren't addressed AT ALL which annoyed me. They made a point of showing Gwen on his monitor but wouldn't he also want to see how Alice is coping? Wouldn't that also serve as a sort of self-punishment which Jack seems prone to?
Lauren Ambrose is almost always amazing. I've been a fan of her since Can't Hardly Wait.
I really grew to like Esther...I know they said how Suzie was "Death by Torchwood" but there should be a new category, "Death by Sheer Awesomeness" because whenever they have a character come out of their shell who's a bit nerdy, who's used to being in the background and doing the crap work and hacking into things...THEY KILL THEM OFF!!!!
I hate it. Every character I can identify with gets killed and what kind of message is that? That I'm nothing more than a red shirt, too?
I'll watch more episodes because it's Torchwood and it pisses me off and makes me cringe but I have to watch what Jack is up to and how cute Anwen is. However, it NEEDS to go back to MOTW. At the very least, they could do it like SJA did where a plot is resolved in 2-4 episodes, NOT TEN!
