Hi there. Long Time No Post

I think that is the longest I have gone in a while without posting. Part of it was that Peter had to try to finish some deadline work so he was on the computer and I haven’t found a word processing program for the iPad that I feel comfortable using. The other part is that Disney hasn't upgraded to wifi so we are still ethernet dependent at a rather pricey price.
I am putting this behind a cut because it is going to be long.
We left our story with an early days travel because our flight was cancelled the day before due to high winds and rain. We got up at 5:00 to make our flight. Caroline was a trooper and got moving and dressed with no complaint. We made our flight and got to Orlando pretty much on time. We got to the rental car and I couldn’t find my iPhone. I checked through my pockets and bags. No phone. Panic sets in. I go back into the airport and go to the baggage help area. I give them my name and the flight number I was on. Yes, they did find an iPhone and, after describing the picture that comes up, they agreed the phone was mine. The nice lady asked for my ID. I reach into my pocket and realize that in turning out my pockets, I had left my ID back in the rental car. So back to the car I go.
Now Peter has to be onstage at 2:30 in Tampa and we are still in Orlando and the clock is ticking eating up the time we had to get to Tampa. I get my ID and am informed that I had to go back to the gate to get it. They get me a special pass to go back through security to go to the gate. They also send someone with me to get me to the front of the line so I could get quickly through security. So I was escorted to the front of the line with some glares from the people behind me. They pulled me to the front of the scanning. I caught the next tram out to the gates and then wound my way through strollers, small children and large rolling suitcases. I got my phone from the nice lady at the gate and headed back.
We did make it about an hour before Peter had to go on so he had a little time to regroup. Caroline and I had lunch and then joined Peter at his table. Peter took Caroline to meet Lee Arenberg and Martin Klebba since she had just seen the first Pirates movie. She had met them before at DragonCon but had no context for who they were. Lee did remember meeting her and did the “ ‘ello Poppet” which made her go wide-eyed but he returned to his friendly self and got a hug from her. Caroline was impressed that Marty had an action figure of himself. She then met Lee Meriwether who was in a couple of episodes of Batman including one with King Tut and the Adam West Batman movie as Catwoman. Caroline discussed Batman with her and impressed Lee with her understanding of the tropes of the show. Caroline then drew Lee M a picture of a leopard with the words “You’re the Best! Love Caroline” on it. Lee M was very touched. I took Caroline swimming while Peter did another panel. That evening was going to be a cabaret that Peter was participating in. Before that we went to the Klingon feast where Peter introduced me to Stephen Culp (Rex Van De Kamp from Desperate Housewives among many other roles) who is a really nice down to earth guy and Robert O’Reilly (Gowron from various episodes of Star Trek) who is a really pip. Robert and Peter had done a Star Trek convention in Ireland together over 10 years ago and had become really good buddies.
During the cabaret, Lee and Marty did a brilliant dead-on parody of Beckett’s Waiting of Godot called Waiting in Tampa. Someone NEEDS to do a production of the show with them in the leads. They were just wonderful and very very funny. The other actors acquitted themselves well. It was a delightful evening. Peter read “Skippy the Jedi Droid” and told a good joke.
On Sunday we got up early to drive to Disney. Peter was driving us there and then going back for the second day of the convention. Caroline and I were going to the Magic Kingdom for the day. We got to our resort, which was the Caribbean Beach and checked in. Our room wouldn’t be ready until later in the day but that didn’t matter because we were going to be park hopping during the day. Caroline and I caught the bus to the Magic Kingdom and Peter drove back to the convention where he had fun and talked to a lot of fans.
That day there had been a marathon and a half marathon through the parks so transportation was a bit dicey due to the runners. Our bus was the first one allowed back to the Magic Kingdom after the Marathon so we got a jump on the resort crowd. We got into the park and headed straight back to Peter Pan. I got fastpasses to the ride but the line was so short, we decided to give it a go. Less than 5 minutes later we were flying over London in a pirate ship. Next was Philharmagic or as Caroline calls it “Duck Butt”. She enjoyed it a lot more this time because she had seen and remembered more of the movies that the music came from. And she enjoyed the end with Donald’s rump sticking out of the wall having been fired there by an enchanted tuba. We used our fastpasses to ride Peter Pan again which she still loves.
I convinced her to give the Haunted Mansion a go. She put on her brave face and we went through it. She made it mostly peeking through her fingers. She made me pinky swear to never take her on that ride again. I have a feeling it is going to be one of her favorites down the road. After that we were walking towards Pirates when the Riverboat caught her eye so we rode that. Pirates was next on our list. She had some trepidation about it from some fuzzy memories but since she had seen the film, she wanted to ride the ride. We went through and Caroline came out with a new favorite ride. Since the line was so short, we rode it a couple of times much to her delight. We rode the carpets and I got wet when a “camel” spit on me.
Tomorrowland was our next stop and we got fastpasses for Buzz Lightyear which Caroline wasn’t sure about. She did want to ride the people mover which never has a line or not a long one. We did that and it timed out to our fastpass time for Buzz. Once we were inside, Caroline remembered the ride and was very happily blasting away at Zurg and his minions. We came out and got another fastpass when and did a few other things. We came back and rode Buzz again then got fastpass again. We rode the Carousel of Progress which I don’t think I have ridden since the late 70s. They have updated it kinda sorta but that song still can get stuck in your head. Caroline found it interesting from a historical point of view but the future stuff had her giggling. Come back out and went to ride Buzz again.
At this point we were joined by her friend Emily and her dad who is my friend Graham. We had dinner together and the two girls chatted with each other while Graham and I caught up on news. After that we went to the Monster Laugh Floor and laughed a lot. Peter came into the park and joined up with us. We watched the new evening show that turns the Magic Castle into an animated character. It is amazing to watch and they put pictures in that were taken that day at the park. After that was the fireworks display. Caroline and Emily went on Splash Mountain where they were joined by Graham’s girlfriend Emily R. I went with Peter to get him some food and we caught up on the day. We were joined by the Splash Mountain riders. Caroline decided that roller coasters might not be her thing either but she did try it. We talked for a bit. The kids showed each other their favorite aps on their parents’ iPhones. Our friends had to depart after that. We went and rode Pirates again along with Buzz Lightyear and Peter Pan. Since we had been there since 9:15 and we had passed the 12 hour mark, we chose to go back to the resort.
Now Disney had a lot of cool rooms and the Caribbean Beach resort is no slouch on this. They have Pirate themed rooms. You sleep on a pirate ship bed. The drawers look like crates. The carpet looks like wooden planks. The ‘fridge is hidden in a large barrel. There is a chest to put stuff in. The table had a compass rose on it. It was seriously cool. We floated off to sleep dreaming of pirates and treasure.
The next morning we got up and Peter took us over to Animal Kingdom. He had to finish a project before he could join us. Caroline and I headed to the Kilimanjaro Safari which we got on after a short wait. We had fun seeing the Animals that were there. Caroline was a little disappointed that she was on the wrong side to see the big cats (she was seated on the right side of the car). I grabbed us fastpass tickets for the ride and we walked the Pangani trail since we had the time. We went back on the Safari ride and I told the cast member at the front that we would be willing to wait until I could seat Caroline on the left side of the car. He had us step aside and seated other passengers and made sure we had the left side and we lucked out and got the whole row so she could see very easily out of both sides of the car. Peter joined up with us after that and we went to Dinoland so Caroline could play in the Boneyard. Peter went to first aid and got me some bandages since I had done some blistering damage to my feet.
We had reservations for the Prime Time Café that evening so we left the park and went back to the room. We went swimming in the pirate themed main pool which had some kicking waterslides. Caroline loved the waterslides a lot especially the bigger slide. She rode that until we called her back so we could get ready to go to dinner.
We had a very nice dinner at the Prime Time Café and went to see what the wait was for Toy Story Mania which has one of the highest times of any ride in that park. Peter didn’t want to stand on line for 50 to 60 minutes but Caroline convinced him it was worth it. So we stood online and some Disney magic happened. We were picked to go on the ride from another entrance so 60 minutes reduced to 20 and we had a blast. We found out afterwards that we weren’t going to be able to join up with a friend that evening so we cut our time at the park a little short and went back to the hotel to get some rest and see Chuck and Castle.
Tuesday Morning we didn’t set any alarms. We figured after so many early mornings we should give ourselves a chance to recover. I still woke up at 7:30. We were thinking about Epcot but after further thought we decided on the Magic Kingdom. We had tickets to the Hoop-de-doo Review at the 5 pm show so our day was built around that. We used our fastpass tickets to get back on Peter Pan and into Buzzlight year building it around our lunch at Tony’s. We also saw the Monster Laugh Floor and I saw a couple of sequences I hadn’t seen before. We had a very nice lunch at Tony’s.
Caroline wanted to ride Pirates after lunch. We went and looked into her joining the Pirate League which is an extra that they have offered for two years and very popular. They were booked for the day but we were told to check back in about an hour and a half to see if there were any cancelations. We went and rode Buzzlight again and the people mover. Went back to the Pirate League and Disney Magic was with us again. There had been a cancelation and Caroline was in. She had so much fun being made up as a pirate and swearing her oath. There is a secret to the whole thing that I will not tell you but it is very very cool.
So we took Katie Ropewalker (Caroline’s Pirate Name) to the Hoop-de-do review. She was dubious about dinner and a show but warmed to it rather quickly. She wolfed down a bunch of chicken legs, some cucumber and mashed potatoes. The show made her laugh and she gave it a big thumbs up by the end.
Disney MGM had late hours so we agreed to meet up with our friends there. We went in and Toy Story Mania STILL had a 60 minute wait. Graham, little Emily and I went to see Muppets 3-D while the others went to a couple of the stores. We got out of Muppets 3-D and were joined up with our friend Karl. We caught up with the other half of our party and went to see if we could get close to Toy Story Mania. We lucked out in the Disney Magic category and managed to get fastpassed into the ride. We all rode the ride and had a great time. We spent some more time talking and then as the clock was heading for 10, we started out of the park.
We got to the car and I asked Peter where was his stuffed Oswald that we had been taking all over the parks (that’s another entry on its own). We went through everything. No Oswald. Peter goes back to the park and retraces our steps only to find that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit had escaped from his backpack and was on the tracks of Toy Story Mania. We got Oswald back and went back to our hotel where we packed up our stuff and figured out our plans for Wednesday.
Wednesday was our travel day home but before we left we made probably our final pilgrimage to the empty shell of the building that once held our beloved Adventurers’ Club. We took some pictures and said our farewells since the building is slated for demolition later this month.
We timed out our airport arrival pretty perfectly. Disney had a system where you can check your bags on property and get your boarding pass which saves you a lot of time at the airport. We took advantage of this and only had our care-ons with us.
The only wrinkle we had was at the airport.
We were flying Southwestern which has this early bird check in that costs about 20 bucks per ticket but is so worth it since the seating is first come, first serve.
Southwest boards the following way
Blue Sleeve tickets which have medical papers attached to it.
Then
A 1-30
A 31-60
Family Boarding This is the important part
B 1-30
B 31-60
C 1-30
C 31-60
We had positions A28, A29, A30 for the trip
They had a large group of wheelchairs patrons and one child who was wheelchair bound (cererbral palsy by the look of it. The kid was interacting with the mother and father while waiting for the plane. They were playing some board game.)
So they load the wheelchair passengers and the child first. Behind them were a number of families that were to board between group A and group B.
The next passengers were a family of four with a smaller child but the kids had been running around like banshees so nothing wrong with them. The mother basically brow beat the person boarding the plane to let her and her children on because "that was the way it was SUPPOSE to be done" not the way it was on Southwest. Other families figured this was their way to push in but it was shut down by the person at the podium. So they were being pushy about being not allowed to board when they wanted since the airline let that family on.
Meanwhile parents and others who had shelled out the 20 bucks to get on with the A group were not happy. There was rumbling and rustling from the people who should be boarding.
THEN an elderly guy was just STANDS There and won't let anyone past him believing that since he got there first, he should be on first. His wife got him out of there before the people behind him starting throwing choice words at him.
By this time the crowds was not happy.
Also with Southwest, you can't save seats. Which several people tried to do with large packages and the like and the crew had to get them to move those since it was a full plane and the seat could not be held. So we had a second set of rumblings.
I had the great good fortune to have a very nice lady who sat in front of me and did Sudoku the flight up and DIDN'T put her seat back for which my knees are grateful.
We got home pretty much when we expect to. We were tired but fine.
In short, we had a great time. We saw a number of friends and made some new ones. It was a good trip.
I am grateful for all the Disney Magic that worked in our favor.
