It is hard to believe that another year has passed and we are rapidly coming up on the Shiny New Year.

Happy New Year is the cry in the streets at Midnight on January 1st. Hugs and kisses follow like a wave with the changing time zones until it hits the date line and becomes January 2nd. On my iPhone I still hang onto what time it is in Melbourne and Auckland because they are practically a day ahead of me.

We have another phrase in our house on New Year’s Day, “Happy Birthday” since it is my stepdaughter Gwen’s natal day. But I Digress

A lot is put onto the New Year. All our hopes and dreams that this year (fill in the blank) will happen. That this year I will finally (fill in the blank). This year is going to be different for me because….. For many it seems to be a big shiny reset button that allows you to clean the slate and have another go at it.

Some make resolutions to try and do better or different. Others make promises to themselves that they hope they can keep. The list can be long. And then there is the scheduling of how one is going to keep all these shiny new promises and resolutions and in the back of one’s brain, and what one is going to do when they don’t keep up with the New Year.

And eventually the New Year is not so new anymore. Things return to pretty much normal and we slowing get use to writing 2011 rather than 2010 on various missives. The calendar ticks from January to February and then onto to March. Suddenly we find ourselves in May and June wondering where Winter and Spring went. The Summer flies by and we are into Autumn and looking at the calendar at the upcoming holidays and thinking back over the year that just zipped by. Just as suddenly we find ourselves back to this point. Looking at the New Year on the horizon with all its promise and hope.

So Happy New Year. I hope 2011 will be better to you than 2010 was.

And remember if 2011 sucks, 2012 is just around the corner.

This was my entry to the Live Journal Idol contest this week which was an entry by choice rather than by lot. If you liked it, I hope you will cast a vote for me so I can continue to write

I always wonder whether or not to make resolutions. Sometimes I just make adjustments. I love New Years. Birthdays often feel like personal New Years Days.

I do a Birthday letter to myself every year and then open it up the next birthday. I also write a second letter on a decade mark and open it up 10 years later.

Birthdays are our person New Years.

Go ahead and use it. I would love to see what you do with the idea.

I get a sense of my past and where my head was at when I wrote the missive.

The 10 year ones can be very interesting because a lot can happen to one in 10 years. 10 years ago I was dating my now husband and I had just gotten a job at Del Rey Books. 10 years later the job went the way of the Dodo and I have a lovely 8 year old girl in my life.

That is SUCH a great idea. I bet it's interesting to read what you wrote a year before and 10 years before.

Thanks for sharing!

I enjoyed this, yeah...it seems like the writers this week understand the frailty of resolutions but the power of being resolute. I concur.

It's so true, the years slip by one after another. I think I'll remember this one well, and glad take along your wishes that next year be better. I hope it brings you good things too.

The older I get, the faster the years go by and the longer the days seem. Happy New Year!
