puppetmaker: (Caroline and me)

So the 2nd half of DragonCon is going to slide to either later today or tomorrow. Peter and Caroline are going to take me out to lunch at a place I like a lot on the North Shore. We’ll probably go to the comic book store along with a few other places.

I have been writing myself a letter for me to open the next year to see where my mind was at then. Then there are the letters I write on the 10 year mark that I don’t open until the next mark. I really need to find my letter for myself at 50 which I wrote at 40 which I am going to need in a few years.

This year I thought I would post what I feel comfortable to post here which will make it much easier to find next year. However I am going to put my handwritten letter in the filing cabinet for next year and hope it doesn’t get eaten. I swear that filing cabinet eats material.

Dear Kathleen,

Well you made it through another year. Like the rest of your life, it had its ups and downs. There were good days and bad.

You went to Australia and New Zealand which you weren’t expecting to do at your last birthday. It was an adventure for Peter, Caroline, and me. We went to Hobbiton. We fed kangaroos and wallabies. We saw penguins run up the beach. We met a lot of wonderful people and had a lot of fun. Those were good days.

Peter had to have back surgery this past year. It was necessary and he is much better off getting it done than not done. It was scary at times but things are so much better.

You took another course from Wendy Froud and met so many more wonderful women. You weren’t sure if you should, but it was totally worth it. And the new stuff you learned there was helpful with your DragonCon dolls. You even had a cool commission that was fun to figure out.

You did slack on the exercise so you need to do better there. Your eating habits were OK but you know you can do better. So let’s pick up on those and be kinder to your body. You had a couple of health scares and some continuing problems with knees and back which you know is just going to get worse over time so you need to do all you can to stave it off. Knock wood your hands are still working without too much trouble. Getting old may be hard but remember that it sure beats the alternative.

Caroline is growing up so quickly. She is such a storyteller. She is a loving daughter and a good sister. Her teachers praise her generous heart and giving spirit. I think we are raising her right. She is also growing at an artist which is fun to watch. She wants to do so many things. I want her to slow down just a little and be my little girl before she is my big girl. But I know that she needs to move at her own pace. I think I say this every year. She is the light of my life.

The 5 goals you want to try this year.

1) Find a couple more anthologies to write for. This year you gained a couple of writing credits including your first original comic book work with Peter and a short story in the Masked anthology. I want to do more but am having a hard time figuring out how to do it. You are a good writer now you need to be an on-time good writer. You have resources, use them.

2) Finish up the dolls from DragonCon. You have some great starts on the projects but your finish needs work. Then try doing projects over time rather than in short period with a rush at the end. You have so many puppet and dolls ideas, create them rather than thanking them.

3) Figure out how to get your stuff online for sale. I swear I have been writing this down every year for a while now and, post DragonCon, I always tell myself that I am going to do it but this is the YEAR for at least getting my etsy shop going if not a whole website to show and sell.

4) Get back to the gym and get back into a pattern of exercise. You feel so much better and in control when you exercise.

5) Getting Caroline’s Girl Scout Troop up and running again. I need to call the council and talk to the school. It will be a lot of work but I think she will enjoy it a lot.

So there it is. Remember to take some time for yourself from time to time. It’s not selfish but self preservation. Love your family because they have been there for you in good times and bad. Respect your friendships because your friends have had your back when you needed it most.

You’ve done pretty well so far, lets make the next year take the next leap.

Love ya,
Kath

Happy birthday!

I've tried writing the letters to myself on many occasions but never find anything to write that matters a year from now. It's interesting to see what we think is important right now.
