Happy Birthday to the Statue of Liberty!

On this day in 1885, the French frigate Isere sailed into New York Harbor with the 350 pieces in 214 crates that would be assembled into the statue that we all know today. So lets give a little love to that Green Lady who stands nobly in the New York Harbor.
In New York it is hard to get a divorce in fact you have to put up some serious cash for the privilege. New York does not have a no-fault divorce and the reasons why you can get a divorce are limited to adultery, abandonment, cruelty, and imprisonment. That’s it. People and their families are put through the ringer to prove one of the four so that the divorce can proceed. But over the years the burden of proof has come down to divorce on the grounds of cruelty because he called her fat or she didn’t make the bed or he belittled her in front of her friends or she loves her dogs more than him and told him so. Really silly stuff that holds up in court because there is currently not a way to say “This isn’t working for us” and divided things up and go on their merry way. There is a bill in the New York State Legislature (again) to get the concept of no fault divorce on the books. It may pass this time. (No worries about Peter and me, I was reading an article in the New York Times about it).
I think there need to be a term for people from age 18 to say 26 (how long you can stay on your parent’s insurance). One is declared an adult at 18 and is responsible for all the privileges and rules there in. But most are just starting college and if you go to grad school, you are usually not out of scholarly pursuits until about 26. People are choosing to start families later and get married later in life. I have to say that I am one of those people. I didn’t get married until I was 37 and didn’t have a child until I was 39. I’m in no way saying that what I did is what everyone should do. I guess I am saying that younger people (early to mid 20s) shouldn’t feel bad if they don’t get married and have kids then.
Speaking of getting out of school, I would like to congratulate the class of 2010 in whatever form that class takes. You have worked hard to get where you are and you should be proud of your achievements. GO YOU! And I am crossing my fingers that you can find gainful employment in your chosen field.
Today is finishing the props and gathering up the items I need for tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow is D-Day for the puppet show. Wish us luck as we set out to amuse the masses at Caroline’s school.
I am grateful for opportunities to stretch my artistic muscles.
