Yesterday was a long day even though it was still 24 hours. Caroline’s fever kept spiking even with counter measures. I made an appointment with her Doctor for 4 pm but by Noon she was 104 and we were afraid it would keep climbing. So Peter took her to the Doctor. They did some tests and came back with those words that parents don’t want to hear this flu season, H1N1. She is now on tamiflu and a regiment of meds to keep the fever down and make her comfortable. This morning she is showing signs of being back to her old self. We have to see how she is doing tomorrow to determine if she is going to school on Thursday. Like I said, a very long day. Peter stayed up with her all night and I took over this morning to let him get some sleep.

I didn’t get anything done about just about anything else including the novel writing. I just couldn’t get my head into the game because I was so worried about Caroline. Peter went on to write the next two issues of X-Factor so it is easy to tell who the professional writer is in the house. The man is a writing machine.

It is nice to know what is wrong with our little girl but at the same time it is kind of scary. I know she will get better but we have to keep an eye on her to make sure that the fever doesn’t get too high.

I am grateful that we have been able to keep her temperature down.

very, very few people who are getting H1N1 in its current form die from it.

Though it is understandable that you would worry. *hugs*

I am grateful that there is a low rate of mortality to it.

I think my concern was/is the fever that has been ripping through her little body.

Thanks for the hugs. I do feel much better than I did yesterday about the whole thing.

There is lots and lots of handwashing going on in Casa David. Laundry too. We are doing all we can to not get this bug.

Thanks for the kind words.

She seems to be on the mend but every time we think she is past it, she then spikes a fever and we are back to the races with her. I would like the family to be able to get a good night sleep at some point.

But things are better and at least we know what we are dealing with right now.

The highest fever I ever had was when I was about Caroline's age & got the flu. My mother wound up putting me in a tepid bath to help bring it down.

As long as you keep doing what you're doing, she'll be alright. Watch especially for temperature spikes in the late afternoon / early evening.

It is the fever that seems to pop up very late at night /early in the morning that is killing us right now. Peter stayed up with her all night last night to make sure she was OK.

We have been using isopropyl alcohol to help bring the fever down.

Caroline is blessed to have such loving parents that will stay with her through the night. I hope she pulls through okay, which it sounds like she will...

Thanks for the hugs.

I am on the Tamiflu bandwagon. It is amazing how much better she is after 24 hours being on it.

We're trying really really hard. On the plus side, if one is infected we haven't infected the other since we have been sleeping in shifts.

we had H1N1 couple of weeks ago - only thing I thought was different about it...it seemed longer than the typical flu.

We're still recovering from the respiratory problems (that's typical for us, except it's not as bad as usual)

Influenza A kills people too...just doesn't get as much press...

Until it does kill someone. We had articles in the local paper about an elderly man who died of the flu.

Also right now most people are vaccinated for the general strains but no one seems to have the H1N1 vaccine in stock on Long Island.

Hope your lungs feel back to normal soon. Chest gunk sucks.

If it helps at all with the scary, current wisdom on H1N1 is that it's really no worse than the usual seasonal flu virus - just a different variant. (I get this both from my husband who is an EMT and from my workplace which deals with health care.)

Sounds like Caroline is on the mend, and I'm very glad to hear it.

I read through the CDC website and that does seem the current wisdom.

It was her fever that scared us the most. When she hit 104 and was shaking like a leaf I didn't care what it was, I wanted it gone. I wanted my daughter back.

We did have to report the fact that she had H!N! to the school and the Doctor had to report it to the CDC.

She is back to a normal temp right now but we're keeping an eye on her.

Ack! So scary! Hang in there. And no wonder you were distracted yesterday. The important thing is helping Caroline feel better, and I know you are!

You and Peter should also remember to take care of yourselves. H1N1 is quite contagious. Try to avoid an extra week of sick if you can!

Our doctor is putting us on Tamiflu today just to be safe. He says that at this point the vaccine will do us no good.
