Brave New Words

puppetmakerI can’t remember when I first heard the phrase “eye candy” but I do remember where. It was a DragonCon and was said by a friend about a member of a band who had straight long back hair and chiseled features. She looked at him with great admiration and said, “Now there is some eye candy.”
“Eye Candy?” I asked.
“Ya know very easy on the eyes to look at.” she replied with a sly smile.
Ear worm was much later. My sister-in-law, I believe, introduced me to that phrase. She had some song suck in her head and it would not go beyond the chorus that kept repeating and repeating. I find that classification works very well for me since I seem to get those sorts of things stuck in my head.
I learned Troll shortly after I started surfing the world wide web and joined a newsgroup. Someone had as their signature line ‘Don’t Feed the Trolls”. I asked them about it and they politely informed me about Trolls and their ilk including sock puppets. Personally I don’t like to use the phrase sock puppet but that may be because of my background but it is a very descriptive phrase.
The internet has created a new language that is truly global in scope. I can type LOL and most know that means Laugh Out Loud. AFTK is Away from the Key Board or you can use BRB (Be right back). Many words are shorthanded to a letter or 2 to make typing faster. I try to keep my internet slang to a minimum but I find it creeping into my typing online. Now I am blogging and there is a whole new set of slang and shorthand that is used. Fortunately the ones in the know are willing to explain to those of us just getting into it what is being said or we might find ourselves labeled as something we don’t understand.
