I have such cool numbers for my birthday like in 1999 I turned 36. That was a magical year for me. This year I am 10 years older and it is 09/09/09. The year I was born was 1963. The number 9 has had meaning for me through out my life.
Today is also Caroline’s first day of school. She has her backpack all packed up with her school supplies and her favorite book. Her new teacher sent her a letter that Caroline read to me. In the letter the teacher asked Caroline to bring her favorite book. In short order “The Midnight Unicorn” was packed away in her backpack. We also got all the paperwork done and into the backpack. She has picked out the dress she wants to wear for the first day and went to bed early so she would be ready to go today.
I could almost call this Random Thoughts before the Coffee kicks in but I think I’ll keep the title I have since I can only really use it once or until 2109 if I am still around.
DragonCon was a marathon but a lot of fun. We started Thursday night and didn’t stop until Wednesday afternoon. We talked and laughed and caught up with friends and made new friends and partied.
The panels I participated in were interesting. I always learn something. Peter Beagle and I kind of took over the page to screen panel on the YA track but he had such interesting stories to tell about screenwriting and the business in Hollywood and it is Peter Beagle so you listen to him. He is such a nice guy and if the only thing of his that you have read is “The Last Unicorn,” then you are doing yourself a disservice because he has written lots of splendid books and short stories over the years.
The workmanship masquerade was just stunning. The people who were categorized as novice were just amazing. Marty and I were joking that we go into the judging part just in time because these people would kick our collective butts. We are trying to convince the PTB that the rules need to change just a little and I think we got our wish but I am going to write up my ideas on it and send them on.
The Art show was very nice. John and Anne Parise, as always, did a great job especially considering some of the curve balls they got thrown at the last minute. I didn’t sell anything but I did get a lot of people telling me how much they loved the puppets. I did a George Perez puppet which George named little ‘G and redressed the Peter David puppet I made over 12 years ago. They used them during the Main Masquerade to entertain the audience. Peter gave me a plug during the show and after the show people who knew me were bringing people up to meet me since they wanted to know who did the puppets. Probably the best exposure of my work ever. I am thinking about putting up the puppets on Etsy or maybe E-bay.
Then there were the people that we met there. I have to thank the DragonCon autographing staff for their help in making it possible for me to meet Terry Gilliam. Mr. Gilliam is an artist that is one of my heroes. He is there with Jim Henson for me. Time Bandits was brilliant, Brazil was life changing, and the Adventures of Baron Munchausen got me through a rather dark period in my life. And I got to tell him this. Peter also got to give him a copy of “Monty Sauron’s Flying Nazgul”.
We caught up with quite a few of our friends from Babylon 5 along with some other actors we have gotten to know over the years. Peter got to tell Barry Boswick how much he enjoyed Mr. Boswick in the short piece he had seen from Grease years ago and how he was his favorite Danny. Barry kissed his hand for that.
We also got the chance to talk briefly to Patrick Stewart who said he got his compliment of the day when Caroline’s face broke into a big grin when he affirmed that he was Mr. Woolensworth from Chicken Little. She told him he was cool.
I also really enjoyed meeting people in person that I met on the Internet. I think that happened more this time than any other convention I have been at. Conversations were short sometimes, which I regret, but that was the nature of the beast called DragonCon. I think my favorite was being informed that it was cool that I was real rather than an Internet construct. I felt like Pinocchio.
I am grateful that we went to DragonCon and had such a good time.
