Since preseason games are being aired on TV, I thought I would give my thoughts on the three-ring circus that is the NFL.

I swear that the NFL gets more insane every year. A number of years ago, after a series of incidents with pro football players, the NFL created a code of conduct to show the world that they were doing something about the problem. But honestly it was more window dressing than something they had to follow. Every time the commissioner handed down a punishment, the player’s union would shout foul and the race would be on to see what might be enforced.

This year has been a banner year for wondering what is going on in the NFL. Michael Vick was let back in and the Eagles picked him up. Bret Farve is the quarterback for the Vikings (are they REALLY that desperate?), Plaxico Burress probably wished he had a time machine and a clue by four to smack some sense into himself for carrying a loaded gun into a nightclub without a permit. Aqib Talib is waiting to find out what is going to happen to him for his assault of a cabby and resisting arrest because this is the third time he has assaulted someone. And the list goes on.

I am disturbed that Vick’s punishment is greater than others who have killed people because they were drunk or assaulted people of both genders and bragged about it. Personally I think all these people should never see the inside of a NFL locker room and they should hand over all the monies they have earned being a football player to their victims.

Personally I am not watching any Eagles games as much as I might want to. And I plan to write the various advertisers to tell them why I am not watching those games. I may be adding a team or two to the mix that have members that have been given the “boys will be boys” card to get them out of trouble that if they were just Joe six-pack, they would be serving serious time for what they did.

I have a sad feeling that I am not going to be watching much pro football this season.

I am grateful to those players who are honest moral men who have a gift that they show off on the football field.

Well, I do not lump Plaxico being stupid in the same category as Vick. Vick was evil, Burress was stupid. Stupid happens. Evil needs to be snuffed out quickly. If the NFL will not take action, I think we need to hand him over to a squad of little old ladies armed with sharpened knitting needles. If we fill the squad with women that recently lost a pet, he will get what he deserves.

I'm not saying that Plaxico is evil. I do agree he is stupid. And because he was stupid not evil, once he serves his time he is back in the NFL if anyone wants him. Vick should have been kept out until he was too old to play skills or no.

The funny thing is that there was a team meeting that Plaxico attended about the New York gun laws and warning the team about the zero tolerance policy. Apparently he thought he was above it. Also Plaxico is not totally clean since he does have an assault charge against him that he says is fabricated but a jury said was real.

I can't stand people who think they are above the law. These weren't acts of stupidity which hurt themselves, these hurt other people. Drinking isn't an excuse, it's a contribution to the evil. Strict punishment must be handed down and followed by self enforcement, by players themselves.

I took an oath yesterday on my honor to obey the law school code of conduct, accepting the punishments that can happen should I break it. I suggest that football players have to do the same. Publicly, with witnesses and a signature.
