Who lives in a Pineapple Under the Sea?

If you immediately know the answer to that question, you have kids, are a kid a heart, or watch a lot of Nickelodeon for whatever reason. I found out about SpongeBob not through the kids but through a good friend. I watch an episode or two and figured out that I just didn’t quite get it. Then Caroline came along and they watched SpongeBob Squarepants at daycare from time to time and she really liked it. So I sat down and watched it with her at home and I have to say it grew on me. Once I had the characters down and the relationships worked out and stopped worrying why the crab was the father to a whale, it became even more surrealist fun.
So Caroline and I watch SpongeBob with the understanding that she does not imitate the laugh. She enjoys it and is now reading the titles of the episode herself for the most part. I freeze it so she can give it a go. She had questions for me that I couldn’t really answer because they were questions only SpongeBob would really know the answers to.
I got a call from Peter out in San Diego the other evening asking me if Caroline might like to talk to SpongeBob. I said that she would and Peter said he would see what he could do. Yesterday Peter wanted to know where we were at certain parts of the day while he arranged with SpongeBob a time to talk to Caroline. I gave him our itinerary including hitting up the J.C. Penny’s to see if we could get Ariel’s dorm room linens there since they were having a massive bedding sale. (We did score her a dorm room set at more than ½ off along with a couple of other things she really needed).
At about 7 pm our time, the phone rang. Peter said put Caroline on. Caroline got on the phone and said “hello?” She looked a little puzzled it wasn’t daddy and then the dime dropped, “SPONGEBOB! Oh SpongeBob I love you so much!” She then proceeded to ask him some questions including how Gary was at which point Gary interrupted SpongeBob and SpongeBob had to tell Gary that he was talking to Caroline. She had a very animated conversation with Mr. Squarepants, got all her questions answered, and was as happy as a clam after the call.
Peter had set up the phone call with Tom Kenny who voices both Mr. Squarepants and Gary since they were both at SDCC. And Caroline got a very special phone call that just made her day.
I am very grateful to Mr. Kenny for taking the time to talk to my little girl.

That...is...awesome! Caroline's such a lucky kid.

Date: 2009-07-26 06:06 pm (UTC)Okay, so I've never seen an episode and only know the character from the mass merchandising. Nonetheless, that was WAY cool. Kudos to Mr. Kenny and bonus daddy points for P.

Date: 2009-07-27 04:58 am (UTC)I never seen the show; however, I do have a funny story to share myself. With Guide Dogs for the Blind, each letter are labeled as "S" pups, when they are born. Imagine trying not to re-use names of 900+ puppies that are in raiser homes, and 2100 current working guides? The name cannot be used unless the dog gets career changed or retired. Anyhow, when a raiser awaits for their new "charge", they are only given details such as "S" FYL (Female Yellow Lab). That's it, until the dog's name is announced when the puppy "stork" arrives with the puppy truck in their area. I run an e-mail lists (Yahoo!Groups) for grads, staff and raisers of GDB, and one raiser mentioned she was awaiting for her "S" pup and we sometimes will have a guessing contest of what the dog's names would be. I piped up, and it is still a huge hit... I said, "What about SpongeBob SquarePants". Everyone cracked up with that name!

Date: 2009-07-27 06:37 pm (UTC)I just couldn't get into Spongebob the first couple of times I watched it either. But then one afternoon I was home sick and had dozed off with the idiot box on CN. When I woke up, Spongebob had just started (really, who can sleep through that song? ;) ). I was too out of it to find the remote, so I just lay there ... and found myself thoroughly charmed by the little nutjob. Maybe you just have to start with the right episode, heh.
I'm now prone to horrifying the kids in the class du jour by humming (or singing) the 'Goofy Goober' song at random moments. (Or 'F.U.N.' or 'Campfire Song' or or or...) It's fun being the 'weird grownup.' *grin*
