The Tony Awards 2009

puppetmakerI have watched the Tony Awards for years. Being in the theater as long as I have it is just something you do each year usually with your current cast of whatever you are working on.
This year I thought Neil Patrick Harris did a mighty fine job as the MC. I thought that overall the show was a good showcase for the Broadway stage and I liked that they did add some road companies to encourage seeing a road show when it comes into the viewers area. The most amazing thing was at the end where NPH sang a song about what we had just seen while watching the Tonys. And it only ran over 3 minutes. Take that Oscar.
Best presentation had to go to Frank Langella for taking a poke at the Theater Wing and himself before presenting the award.
Best speech I would give to the Billy Elliots (collectively) since they got up there and tried to be like the adults but the "OMG WOW I JUST WON A TONY" came bleeding through. I give the theater wing points for nominating all three boys rather than one. Angela Lansbury was up there too.
My one complaint was the lack of time spent on plays. Musicals were getting all the time they needed for full numbers but plays seem to get a minute at most and it was video rather than on the Tony stage. I wanted to see a little more of that scene in "Gods of Carnage" among others. Also revival plays didn't get any airtime were as the musicals did. I wanted to see a piece from "waiting for Godot" (which they pronounced correctly or rather as the playwright wanted it said) and I have worked on "Joe Turner has come and gone" so I wanted to see what this production looked like.
Plays are not the red-headed b*st*ard step children of the musical. And I really hate when they are treated as such.
I am grateful that we watched and enjoyed the Tonys as a family.
