But first I would like to announce some good news. Ariel got her first college acceptance letter from Sacred Heart in Connecticut. This is the school that was her first choice so she is walking on air right now.
Now onto my Oscar musings.
Award for Sound Track
This is the whole score rather than just a song. The nominees are a little more diverse than we had in a couple of years.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button composed by Alexandre Desplat has a wide pallet of music to choose from since it starts the early 1900 and goes to the early 2000s. His choices were interesting and did move the film forward but I didn't find it memorable. Defiance composed by James Newton Howard is from a film we have but haven't seen. Milk composed by Danny Elfman and it sounded like an Elfman soundtrack but a little more mature than his earlier work Slumdog Millionaire composed by A.R. Rahman was a rocking soundtrack that played very well with the movie. I really enjoyed. WALL-E composed by Thomas Newman is the one that I think should win it. It works so well with the film and adds to it without overpowering the film.
So I think it will go to Button but it should go to Wall-E.
Award for Song
Slumdog Millionaire has two up and Wall-E has one. I like "Jai Ho" better than "Oh Saya". I did like "Down to Earth" a lot but I think "Jai Ho" has it.
Award for Sound Editing
Sound Editor take the dialogue, music, and effects and puts it all together to make a whole from the parts. It is very tricky to do and my hat is off to anyone who can do it.
The Dark Knight edited by Richard King had a rich field of sound to play with. Iron Man edited by Frank Eulner and Christopher Boyes is another sound effect heavy movie that had a good balance between the dialogue and the special effects which couldn't have been easy. Slumdog Millionaire edited byTom Sayers had a lot of dialogue to work through along with all the other pieces of the puzzle. Good job but not that impressive. WALL-E edited by Ben Burtt and Matthew Wood which I have to admit a prejudice to because I have worked with Ben but even without that, I thought that this was the film that did the best job of putting all the elements together. Wanted edited by Wylie Stateman was fine but after Dark Knight and Iron Man was lacking a bit.
So I like Wall-E but I think actually that Dark Knight will take it.
Award for Sound Mixing
Now that you have all the tracks set up, you have to put them together into one track. That is were the sound mixer comes in. They have to pull the final balance to the film.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was a good mix but I think that some of the dialogue got a little too soft which made it hard to hear. The Dark Knight is a masterpiece. They made it loud when it needed to be loud and soft when it needed to soft which couldn't have been easy. The balance must have been a bear to put together. Slumdog Millionaire is good but not great. WALL-E is a masterpiece of mixing and it works well. Wanted was a little too loud for my taste.
So Wall-E should win but Button will probably get the nod.
Costumes and Make-up Tomorrow and what is ever left on Sunday.
I am grateful that Ariel got into the college of her choice.

The score I'm guessing will win is Slumdog Millionaire: the Bollywood style is unusual enough to probably grab the Academy voters' attention. But Thomas Newman (I'm surprised he hasn't won one yet) has a good chance.
I don't have guesses on the other categories. Any speculation would be me blowing hot air. One of three or five will win!
