And today we find out who will be who next or rather who has been tapped to be the next Doctor Who. The fan speculation is at a frenzy pitch. The bookies have odds on all the rumored actors. And whoever it is, they are going to be both praised and pilloried by fandom. There is no way everyone is going to be happy with the choice. Remember how the fans howled about Martha then howled when she left the show and then howled some more when Donna was announced and are now howling that she is gone too. The kvetching from the fans at the end of the last season was monumental.

Fans want what they can't have and when you give it to them, they decide that they didn't really want that. I have seen it in books, movies, TV, and comics. The creator gives the fans what they want and then is ripped for doing so.

Soaps are a good example of that. The fans are crying to get a set of star crossed lovers together. The writers get everything to work out in their lives so they can be together and the fans declare that the happy ending is boring so then that perfect couple either divorces or pick up another lover or have another tragedy that pulls them apart and the fans are happy again for a little while.

I remember being at a convention with the Firefly cast and the fans were upset about a rumor that they had heard about something in the movie that was coming out soon. They kept trying to get the cast to confirm the rumor and excoriate Joss for doing such an evil thing. Adam Balwin stood up and said, "I want you to repeat after me. Trust Joss. (the audience complies) OK let's try that again Trust JOSS (the audience repeats with more vigor). Just keep telling yourself that and you'll be happier. Believe me, Joss knows what he is doing. He created this show." This defused the situation and it became a catch phrase for everyone who had been at that panel.

So whoever is announced today, providing that they can survive the oncoming storm heading their direction, is the next Doctor and I will watch what Mr. Moffat comes up with to do with him in 2010. I am willing to trust those who create to amuse and amaze me since they have done a pretty good job so far.

I am grateful that fandom does care about whatever they are fans of with great passion be it a TV show or a comic or a sports team or an artist or animals or.....

I was one of the ones who was wary of Catherine Tate's selection, but I've never been a fan of her comedy show. I'll admit she did very well.

Mind you, I've just dropped a huge spoiler on this in my own LJ..

They're doing a special edition of the Confidential on the BBC at 5:35 GMT. So I'd check the BBC website in about 2 hours..

I have just seen this sort of behavior over and over.

I think a lot of fandom is getting used to change. We get so comfortable and familiar with our characters and when they leave us it's a little like a death or a divorce. We're crushed but we move on and get attached to the replacement.

Do you think because of the Internet that this is happening faster than it did in fandom before the Internet?

You said it!!

I'm nervous about the new Doctor, and I'm really really going to miss David Tennant. But I figure, why get myself all worked up about it? Or start pitching a fit if I don't like who they choose? Once he is chosen, there is nothing that can be done about. So I hope I'll like him, and I'm willing to give him a chance. Moffat is a brilliant writer and I am very excited about him taking over Who. So I guess I'll have to say "Trust Moffat!"

Though I will say I was never ever more upset with a TV show then with the end of season 4 and what happened to Donna. She really was my favorite companion and it makes me cry every time I watch what happens to her. That is something I wanted to find someone and start yelling at them for doing that to her.

It was the Big Red Reset Button that RTD handed the Moffat so that all the toys were put back before he came in.

Also Catherine Tate stated waaaay back that she had agreed to do this for a year so I knew that Donna was out before she was in. How they did it was rather harsh and I still tear up when I watch the end of the episode.

I'm sure whoever's been chosen is braced for the reaction.

I hope so.

I remember this kid in Diary of a Call Girl. He did well with his role there.

Plus he has a lot of theater experience which will serve him well.

My favorite are all the people who are concerned that there's just no way that anyone could possibly follow David Tennant -- when just three years ago they were saying the exact same thing about Christopher Eccleston, and in 1981 they were saying the exact same thing about Tom Baker. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose....

I'm still trying to convince my partners in Fellowship of the White Star about this phenomenon. It was the fact that they didn't understand this part of fandom in general that is why before I agreed to partner with them, I insisted on creative control.

I feel, from what I've seen in comics and gaming before, that giving the fans what they ask for is not really giving them what they want.
