I think my favorite Gilbert and Sullivan is "Pirates of Penzance" but close in my heart for the amount of fun I have had working two different productions is "the Mikado". And, of course, we screwed around with I've got a little list but I can't think of many productions that don't add a little local flavor to that song unless they are purists of which I know three companies that perform G&S without changing a word and try to keep to the sensibilities of the time.

Anyway, that song has been playing through my head for the past week. I seem to have the Eric Idle version on permanent replay. But strangely it has morphed into things that I want to do in the New Year. I have had a hard time writing anything down. I don't know why writing something down makes it more real for me, I just know that it does.

I know the percentage of NYR that go down the tubes within the first month is rather high.

I know that life changes have to come in stages rather than trying everything at once.

But I also know that I started the wheels on some of this last year in anticipation of this year.

Last year I did a 101 in 1001 list and got next to nothing done on it (or so I think because I haven't looked back at the list and I might be pleasantly surprised.) I know I started a bunch of stuff but my follow-through just sucked rocks.

So this year the list is not 101 things long but it is still a little lengthy so I am going to put it behind a

1. Exercise in some form each and every day. Just get my butt off the couch and do something more active than I have been. Be that sit-ups or bowling or full out at the gym. Just something to get my metabolism moving and possibly the endorphins back into wack.

2. When typing, rather than going to spell check when that evil red line shows up, I will see if I can correctly spell the word without help. I know how to spell and I also know I have gotten lazy about spelling correctly which I need to be able to do.

3. I will participate in my child's continuing education. This includes doing homework with her, reading to her, encouraging her to learn things, participating as a PTA parent in our school, and volunteering in the school library.

4. I will complete the challenges and swaps I signed up for including two that I should have and didn't complete last year, the Discworld Challenge, and the Penny Doll challenge. I shall do at least one swap and one challenge for the Harry Potter group or drop the group next year since I am not participating. I will get things done a week before the convention rather than the day before or even at the convention. (which means I need to get cracking for Farpoint).

5. I will exam all the Internet communities I belong to and trim down the ones that I am no longer interested in or participating in. I will spend less time on the Internet and chatting with others on the Internet and talk to the people in my house more often

6. I will seek out opportunities that I know exist to earn income including the dolls, puppets and writing. I will set up an esty site this year and possibly try to sell a puppet on E-bay or through my website. I will work on promoting me this year

7. I will write up that un-named project that Peter and I have been passing back and forth. I will write one comic book script this year just as an exercise in how to do it. If I can sell it, all the better. I will write at least an outline of the two books I have been working on and at least one of the three short stories I have started.

8. I will write in my private journal once a day as a head cleaning exercise. I also will give myself permission to pamper myself once a week in some fashion. I will take time for myself and not feel guilty about it.

9. I will read more this year. That is a habit I have fallen out of since I had Caroline and I really need to get myself back up to my old speed. So 52 books is my goal this year.

10. I will clean and sort through the clutter. I will start in the Kitchen and then move through the house organizing the house so that on New Years Eve of this year, I can say that I know everything I have in my house (with the exception of the attic). I will also sort out the garage so we can get the car back in there.

11. I will add a least 7 of new recipes to my repertory. I could create these or learn them but I want to add to what I can cook. I will bake bread from scratch at least once this year.

12. I won't let deadlines rule my world and make me feel guilty if I am doing something else.

I am grateful that I did put this list out here so it will become more "real" and motivate my follow-through.

I think that's an admirable list

I know you say you want to spend LESS time on the internet, but since you also want to read more I thought I'd recommend [livejournal.com profile] booklisters

you have to apply to get in, but I doubt you'd have any trouble. It's a good place to learn about books that are out there and likely worth reading
