Yet again my coffee and I have not met. I finally got a pot brewed but very little has passed my lips. I was getting Caroline ready for school and getting the cats squared away for the day and a bunch of other little things.

A bunch of little things that need to be done today to get me towards my goal. So wish me luck.

My sympathies to all those who just found or will shortly find themselves unemployed in the publishing bloodbath that is going on right now. I know a lot of people are watching their backs very carefully as everything shakes down. I know your pain all too well having been let go during the Ballantine/little Random House merge. Unfortunately, the industry is very tight and jobs are scarce at best.

That goes for everyone else who is finding themselves shown the door right before the end of the year. My sympathies to all of you. And to those who have been looking for work only to find a lot of doors closing on their feet.

Football should be interesting this weekend. Both college and pro teams have a number of games that really do count towards all the marbles. Basketball is leaving me cold both college and pro which is unusual because usually one or the other amuses me. We have been watching Hockey at the Bowling Alley while bowling in our leagues. Peter has come to the conclusion that every time he looks up, a fight breaks out.

Off to clean the dreaded room.

I am grateful for good job news for us and all my friends.

Yeah, the publishing world is rather nervous-making right now. So far the news here is that we won't get annual raises till July at the earliest (they usually happen in Jan), and there's a hiring freeze. One of the designers just lost her assistant the other day and has no idea how she's gonna cope with the added workload...

I hate opening my email anymore, you know? Another buyer who sits across from me lost 3 of her 4 S&S reps yesterday. Still waiting to hear if my HMH reps made it through-- don't get me started about the mergers and acquisitions this year! My corner of the world has been roiling for months.

It's a BAD, bad week.
