LJ Idol Week 23 Endurance

Overheard at a cocktail party for a new hot shot in the publishing industry.
"Well they are very popular now but I don't see them enduring into the next century."
------------
People are often asked as to what they see their legacy is or what will endure about their work. I have heard pat answers like "the future will tell" or "my writings are my legacy" and some rather poignant answers about how they do hope to be remembered by future generations.
I have heard people ask my husband this question more than once. I heard it last weekend when Peter and Harlan did an hour talk together and it was asked of them. I expect I might hear it again this weekend when we go to the NYCC either at a panel he is on or when he is signing at his table. What of his many works will endure? What will his legacy be? A comic book writer who also wrote fiction? A writer of stuff? A writer? What of his works will endure?
I think we can ask that of a lot of people. What will be remembered of them? What will endure from this time into the next? Some are easy. I am pretty sure that the word Muppet and Jim Henson is going to carry on from generation to generation. But that may be personal bias talking.
Others are more ethereal like Plank's constant. Quick how many of you knew that his first name was Max and he taught at Humboldt University in Berlin? Without Googling it? How many of you know why it is important? Will it endured or be replaced by another?
We know Shakespeare but tend to forget other playwrights of the time. Marlowe maybe but believe me there are plenty of others that wrote decent plays that were performed at the time and are now relegated to academia and the occasional performance to show how clever the artistic director is.
We know Mozart but until Amadeus came along how many of you seriously knew who Salieri was? Or his importance at the time? I do think the Beatles will endure. I am less sure about ELO or the Pet Shop Boys. Music is a good example of what endures. Classical music is played every day in various formats all over the planet.
Quick, name a Roman Emperor and then name his predecessor and successor that was not in I, Claudius. Not so easy to do.
Things do endure. Stonehenge, the Pyramids, the Easter Island statues (as long as they can keep the tourists from them) to name a few. We marvel at these things that have been around before recorded history. We puzzle as to the purposes of these structures and how they were created.
I still have a stuffed bunny that I have had since I was a baby. I named it Ruzzy. It has gone all over the world with me in my travels. This beat up bunny has endured.

True Story
A famous writer of plays is asked by a scholar about a passage in a play that he wrote that had exactly one reading among his friends. Apparently a copy of the play has been circulating among academia and there is a heated debate between this scholar and another one about a certain passage of the play. The scholar gives the playwright his interpretation and that of the other scholar and asked who is right. The response came back from the writer, "How the hell did you get a copy of this? and "You're missing a page" and it is accompanied with the missing script page which of course changes every thing.

New York Comic Con is this weekend. And it has turned from a sprint to a marathon. There are various functions that Peter needs to attend before the convention even starts. So we have events now going Wednesday April 16th to Monday April 21st and possibly beyond that. That involved going into the city and then getting home again which adds about 2 hours to anything we do.
Walking around the Javits Center is an Endurance test in itself. While not as big as the San Diego convention center, it still is not a small place to get around.
I am sure we will have a blast and a lot of good stories to tell afterwards but it is also going to take some time to recover from the convention. So I am both looking forward to and at the same time dreading how much time this is going to take. My sympathies to the fans who are not going to have some of options I have of places to go hide and rest a bit.

At the swimming pool at a comic book convention
Jo Duffy who, among her many accomplishments, brought Akria to America and worked on a lot of stuff that has endured, decided to take a dip in the pool before the convention.
A number of other fans had the same idea and were talking about the up coming convention.
One person mentioned that they were looking forward to meeting Jo.
One of the other fans snorted derisively and said, "Him? Why would you want to him him? I have and he is a total jerk."
Jo had to dive underwater to stifle her giggles.
I wonder what that fan's face looked like when he saw Jo in context?

This is week 23 of the Live Journal Idol. I started this because of Popfiend's participation last time around.
I figured that I might be around for a bit and I told Peter that I would be happy if I made it into the top 50 well then 25 then 20. He keeps reminding me that my happiness was suppose to have been a while back but he cheers me on from the sidelines and encourages me to continue.
This has been an endurance contest. I started thinking it was a short race for me but now I want to continue on week to week. I want to endure to the next step or twist or turn or whatever Gary can think up.
I like being here. I like writing for a new group of readers many who hadn't a clue who I was or who my husband was. I like all the new friends I have made on Live Journal and all the new journals I have to read and all the new readers I have gained. I have read through all kinds of things. I had given support to those who need it. I have kept my council until asked and then I tend to be brutally honest.
I am glad that I have endure so long and sincerely hope that I will be able to continue a little further to see what else Gary can throw at me.
-------
I am grateful for all that I have endured to get to this point in my life.

This was written for the 23rd week of the 4th LJ Idol competition. There will be some sort of vote at the end of the week probably with some weird twist like only left handed people can vote but if you like this, do remember me.

The vicarious life

Date: 2008-04-16 09:10 pm (UTC)As for the question of endurance, there really is no way to predict what one will be remembered for.
Example:
At my high school reunion, I was remembered for being an individual, for being near the top of my class, for my artistic pursuits, and for sticking up for the underdog. Apparently, because I did not follow the crowd, people admired me for it. They saw me as being too cool and too tough, someone who had no time for the idiots and bigots. Too bad that I didn't know that back then, because I was a miserable teen. I worked so that I could pay for school and dance lessons. School was hell; I was constantly bullied and ridiculed. I could have used some moral support. It would have been nice to know that someone noticed how horrible the other girls treated me, and even better for someone to have decided to stand up against intolerance with me.
In a bizarre twist of fate, I became a role model for about ten of the fifty girls in my graduating class... because they thought I was a lesbian. (You can imagine their surprise when I showed up five years after graduation with a husband, and pictures of two kids.)
I'd hoped that I'd return with a bachelor's degree and a successful internship with a veterinary hospital or zoo. I did not see myself as a success, at least not in the traditional sense. However, now I feel like I've accomplished many things. The difference is that they are more personal accomplishments, like conquering my fear of heights. Once I stopped trying to measure success by the accomplishments of others, I began to treasure those small triumphs.

Date: 2008-04-17 06:01 pm (UTC)And all of them are true. I was either there or knew the parties that I quoted.
Someday I need to tell Peter's favorite story that I tell on occasion about Robin Williams or the one about Chris Reeves who was one heck of a guy.
