I have "Santa Baby" running through my head and not for the usual reasons. When I stage managed "Driving Miss Daisy" with the late great Mary Nell Santacroce as Miss Daisy, there was a sound cue going into the Christmas scene that was "Santa Baby." I had a whole slew of cues that had to be called. Now every time I hear it, that is what comes to mind.

We are in Atlanta at my parents' house with their lovely WiFi connection so I can again ramble on the Internet for the amusement or bemusement of others.

Caroline is excited for Santa's visit. This year she understands so much more about what is going on than she did last year. It is amazing how much difference a year makes. I know that the changes will become less as she becomes older but right now it is leaps rather than steps in a year.

I can remember being a child and the days to Christmas seem to drag on and on starting with Thanksgiving and ending with Christmas Eve. Now I blink and jump from one to the other.

The Christmas tree is nice but it needs gifts underneath it to complete the picture. We have our usual Christmas Eve dinner planned. Today is all about getting ready for tomorrow. But it is also a pause before. A short breath being held in anticipation of tomorrow and what it brings. I am going to enjoy the pause before tumbling to the end of the year.

I am grateful that I can watch Caroline's face as she gazes at the Christmas Tree.

I thought about this yesterday: As I'm not a dad, and the only time I've shared Christmas with my nephews was when they were less than a year old, I've never had to do the Santa thing as an adult.

I actually wonder now how parents do that. I'm also suddenly worried I'd let slip. I'm worried I'd ruin it for kids, by answering the wrong question the wrong way. I guess that whole maintaining-Santa thing's just one of those parenting things you figure out as a parent.

I make things complicated. It's a skill.

Enjoy your Christmas and enjoy your family!
