Welcome back to a third edition of the New Who Review to go long with the third season of the current Doctor Who TV series. Before we begin I want to say something about spoilers in the comments and in the cut. I do a cut because not everyone has had a chance to see this episode yet (or any of the others from this season) and I want it to be as big a surprise for them as it was for me. Along that line, I kindly request that only the episodes that have aired on the SciFi channel be discussed. There is a lot of foreshadowing to the final episodes all through the season and I know it is fun to connect the dots but please allow those who are seeing it for the first time to connect the dots themselves. Also I know about the 4th season casting and would prefer that we keep that out of this too. A new feature this year is the scary factor based on Caroline's reaction to the episode since at 4 I think she is close to the original target audience. Thank you very much for your cooperation in this.
On to the Review....
I had seen Catherine Tate in a few things before this but do confess that I didn't really know who she was until after this episode aired and then I saw the red noses segments with her. So I judged her performance originally just on her acting not on her reputation for her comic timing (which is brilliant in my opinion).
"The Runaway Bride" was a good episode of Doctor Who. It took place on Earth. We had a new point of view character. There was a bit of a mystery to solve by the Doctor. And there was a good old fashion monster with good old fashion motives as to why it was doing what it was doing. All makes for a fun episode.
This one had a Caroline scary factor of hiding her eyes behind her hands when the big baddy showed up. She did peek to see what was going on.
I am grateful that there is going to be a 4th season of Doctor Who.
When we last left our time lord, he was in his TARDIS looking rather sad having said good-bye to Rose Tyler in an alternate dimension when all of the sudden a bride appeared in the TARDIS and we left with "What?" We start this one from the Bride's point of view of walking down the aisle and not quite making it. She finds herself on the TARDIS looking at a very surprised looking Doctor.
This is a good episode for a couple of reasons. It feels like an old style Doctor Who episode right down to the Empress of Racnoss's plan to destroy the world and the Doctor vowing to stop her at any cost. Of course she wants to the destroy the Earth, but she has a good reason as the Doctor has a good reason to stop her in the name of the Time Lords.
Donna really didn't give the Doctor much time to dwell on Rose because so much was happening to her and he does love a mystery. He tends to do best when given something to think about. However the ghost of Rose does sort of hang in the background. Companions come and go but this is the first time in a long time (Adric come to mind) where we see the Doctor thinking about his previous companion rather than just moving onto the next thing.
Overall there are solid performances by the entire cast. The people feel real to me in these stories. They act and react to what is going on around them in a fashion that I would probably do if I found myself on the wrong end of a killer Christmas tree (Ya think that RTD has something against Christmas? Second one in a row in which the background of the holiday is used for evil purpose.)
Next review is for "Smith and Jones" in which the Doctor meets a Doctor (well she will be if she passes her exams and clinical).

Date: 2007-07-09 03:32 pm (UTC)In Bride we see the time and space travel that the Doctor only mentions in Rose; we also see the Doctor dealing with someone who wasn't itching to get away from her life but was quite happy in it and wanted to return to it. (A better match for most of the audience, I think, than Rose... we can sympathize with someone who wants better, brighter things, but I think most of us just want to visit, not run away.) There's enough there to tease the new viewer into backtracking to see just who that person is he keeps talking about, and to lure them on to see the next person who comes aboard.
