The iPhone was released yesterday with much ballyhoo and news reporting. There were lines and reporters interviewing the people in the lines about why they were in line. It is a nifty gadget. I thought that the iPod was a nifty gadget too. We do have one in the house but it belongs to Ariel. I may in the future get one for myself or maybe the iPhone but not today or anytime this summer or even this year. The hype surrounding this swiss-army knife of electronic devices is just amazing to me. And I am an Apple computer user from way back. I have extreme loyalty to that brand of computer.
This morning I perused E-Bay to see what the phones that people snatched up to sell on e-bay are going for. Right now about twice the price seems to be the norm if that. But if you order from Apple.com online they say you will have it in 2 to 4 weeks. Which is not a lot of time but in our "have it now or you are a loser" society, it seems an eternity. It is like the PS3 and the Wii. People waited in line for days to buy one to put it up on E-bay and sell it for a profit. Some people thought that they could fund their kid's education on the money they could see from the sale. Now you can get both for under retail on e-bay still sealed in the box. Also these models don't have the bugs that the first versions have which included bursting into flames because the power supply was faulty. Waiting on new electronic devices is not a bad thing.
I am grateful for the electronic devices I have which have the same functions at the iPhone.

I figure it'll take a day or two, and then reviews of the thing will start appearing talking about all the bugs and points of awkwardness, which will calm the furor somewhat. Then, about 6-10 months from now, we'll start seeing improved iPhones that have all those kinks worked out.
I can wait until the product is everything it should be. And, ya know, it comes down in a price a bit.

I believe that the iPhone will do for cell phones what the iPod did for MP3 players over time. The trick is that when the iPod came out, MP3 players were a new thing. Cell phones are so 80s.

Date: 2007-06-30 02:47 pm (UTC)I have a phone that works fine. (actually my concession is that it's a PDA also, which is a marvelous tool for me) I have an iPod that works fine. Two actually, *grins* I caved and bought the iShuffle because it is so much easier to use while running than my 30G. However, I did only buy both of them about a year ago (the shuffle more recently)
But I don't need a phone that does everything. Heck I don't even use half the features on my phone! :D (and I'm still trying to figure out some of them) And I'm sure not going to pay twice the retail price for it!
