I don't know if this is a national story but I do know that it has happened in a couple of places in the country. A number of people have contracted E.Coli from eating at Taco Bell on Long Island. The minute the problem had been traced there, Taco Bell corporate shut down their stores in the area, told the independently owned ones to close, cleaned them thoroughly, and tossed a lot of food. They did the responsible actions to correct a problem once they knew about it. They had the health inspectors check everything out carefully before they reopened any of the stores. Apparently that is not good enough for one chucklehead who is suing Taco Bell because his kid, who is not starving in the least, got sick. The doofus believes that the restaurant chain is libel even when they DIDN'T know that anything was wrong with their food. I really hope that a judge kicks this one out of court and fines the individual court costs for wasting the court's time.

I did contract a food born virus once from eating at a restaurant and I had a very bad reaction. My Doctor found out what was going on and told me how to take care of it and contacted the health department. I gave the health department a list of where I had eaten with in the two weeks before I got sick. Now this was when Caroline was a baby and because I was sick I couldn't hold her which confused the heck out of her since she was use to Mommy holding her when she was fussy. I didn't even think about suing anyone because I couldn't touch my baby and that was a hardship to me.

There are the online "lawyers" or those who profess to know everything about copyright and libel and slander and if you say anything meeaaaaan about them, they are going to sue you for fill in the blank usually with the wrong legal term being bandied about like an abused cat toy. Fanficers seem to be big into this sort of shouting. I also love the number of people claiming to have law practices who have so much time to play on the internet and read slash and smut.

Then there are lawsuits about ideas being stolen which do take up people's time and money. Have you ever wonder why every studio has a law firm on retainer? Well it has something to do with the number of "legal actions" that are tossed at them every day. I got those sort of "I'm going to sue you because one of your author's used one of my ideas that I got from reading Homer {The Illiad not Simpson}" letters when I was working at Del Rey. It would be a quick walk down to the Del Rey lawyer's assistant with the pertinent facts to have them take care of it. I am not saying that there are legitimate cases out there because I know first hand that there are, but a majority of them are frivolous and have no merit.

I really don't care for ambulance chasers either. I hate every time I see a commercial advertising their services to help the helpless. Again there are very legitimate cases out there of people who were wronged or seriously hurt but because of this sort of thing and their chances of getting a fair shake at their day in court is greatly reduced by this sort of thing.

I am grateful that we do have the legal system we have even if people abuse it.

I found a piece of glass in my omlette at IHOP once. However, I wasn't hurt and they comped the meal (how generous) so I didn't make a BIG stink, but I did call their coprorate office.
