Lloyd Richards was the Dean of the Yale School of Drama during my time there. He was not a tall man but he had a presence about him that was one of quiet dignity and knowledge. When Lloyd spoke you listened. Actors loved working with him as did playwrights. He let me play with his Tony for Fences. Did you know that the medallions spin? Lloyd surround himself with people who knew what they were doing so he could do his job and let them do theirs. August Wilson and Lloyd Richards seemed joined at the theatrical hip. Rarely was one mentioned without the other popping up in the conversation. He will probably go down in theatrical history for his work with developing new playwrights for the American stage. I will always remember his sense of humor and his love of the Drama School and all the people within it.
So within the last year we lost Lloyd, August and Ben Mordichi.
I am grateful that I knew Lloyd.
