Spring has sprung. The trees are in full pollen mode. Unfortunately that means Ariel's allergies are making her pretty sniffy today. Fortunately Claratin works on her symptoms really well so she will be clear by bowling this morning. It is going to be a nice day with a bit of a breeze especially down by the water and since we live on an Island that is not that far away no matter where you are on the Island. I am going to enjoy this weather while it lasts since it won't be long until it heats up and we have summer pounding down on us. I have found that I do better in cold than hot and we are coming to the conclusion that Caroline is the same on this.

Thanks for everyone's comments yesterday both on and off list. It gave me a lot to think about. I guess sometimes I get a little sensitive about what I do as an artist. For a long time I guess I thought of myself as a craftsman rather than an artist. My thinking started changing after I had a long conversation with Neil about puppetry when he was starting to write Mr. Punch. I came out of that conversation thinking differently about what not only I but other puppet builders I knew did. I never really thought of dolls as art until I started seeing doll magazines with these beautiful one of a kind (OOAK) dolls that were practical dolls but also brilliants works of art. Since then I have gone firmly into the Doll as Art camp.

I promise I will do my puppetry and costuming workmanship rant soon. I try to pace out my rants so it doesn't always look like I am ranting about thing.

Knowing that I am not getting anything from Joann Fabrics and Crafts, I wanted to inform the costumers that this weekend the McCall patterns are .99 per pattern (limit 10) and most of the fabric is on sale with some really good deals on the sale fabric and the leftovers from the past season. I picked up a couple of patterns that I might use later for some costumes along with some patterns to make Ariel and Caroline some clothes in the future. I still can't find the jumpsuit kind of pattern my mother used to make me my summer playsuits which I loved dearly. I did find a really cute skort pattern. I may be making clothing that is not costumes this month which may be a first in a long time for me. Before this I think I have only done repair to the clothes around here. I also have a lovely 50% off coupon for today. I might pick-up some more quilt batting for doll making.

Off to make pancakes for the family

I am grateful for anything that makes Ariel's nose feel better.

Considering the work that goes into making the puppets, and considering that they appear in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, puppets ARE an art form. Granted, I don't understand most art these days, but I can look upon a beautiful doll or puppet and be moved. I love it when skilled practitioners make them come to life. It's incredible. It's funny when you start talking to the puppet rather than the person because that's natural.

I have not seen many of your puppets, but the Picard one that I DO remember seeing was very nice. It reminded me forcibly of the "Bull" ventroloquist's dummy that Richard Moll had on one episode of "Night Court". And to know that you made it, that's wonderful.

Don't let them get to you. Puppetry is an art, that's why it's called "puppetry ARTS" rather than puppetry craft.
