I am so glad that we drove home yesterday rather than today. There is rain all up and down the route we took back from Atlanta. This looks to be a gloomy weather day up here on Long Island. That's fine because we don't have anywhere we HAVE to be today for the first time in a while. There are a couple of things I need to do like restock the larder since I let it go since we were going to be away. Next place we have to be at a certain time is our New Years Eve bowling party.
Since everyone else is doing it, I am going to give you the best and the worst of the year for me in various categories I will be making up as I go along.
Best Films for Me in 2005
Best Animated
Wallace and Gromit:The Curse of the Wererabbit.
That one was a hard call too since there have been so many good animated films this year and I have seen most if not all. Corpse Bride is a close second but there was something in that film that never quite engaged me.
Best Drama
Green Street Hooligans
This film still engaged me more on so many levels than any other film I have seen in a long time
Best Special F/X
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
ILM still owns the prize on this one although King Kong did give it a run for their money
Best Science Fiction Film
Serenity
OK this may be a bit of a ringer since I do know people involved in it but as a science fiction story it worked just fine.
Runner up is Aeon Flux in this category
It's not a Remake really Film
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
This version is much closer to the original book than the previous version. They used the author's lyrics for the songs and what happened to each of the kids is the same as the book. Yes, I too could have done without the Daddy subplot but it was a Tim Burton film so what are you going to do?
Oh my gosh it's the Book come to life
Chronicles of Narnia
Understand that I have a deep love for those books. My father read the first one to me and I read the rest. This was the best translation of what I had in my head come to life. It worked for me. The casting director found 4 kids that looked like the kids in the book as described. The White Witch was icy perfection. Aslan was fine but what is it with Finnes and playing mentor roles? How many did he play this year?
Best use of homage
King Kong
I am surprised and pleased about the number of things that Peter Jackson slipped in there that were nodded to the original.
Since I haven't seen a number of films I want to see I am not going to put a best of the year until the year has ended.
I am grateful for all the films I saw in 2005
