The other day I asked Caroline how she felt about something and she responded with “meh”. I informed her that she owed Matt Groening a nickel since his show the Simpsons’ created that word. Bart said it first in the episode Hungry Hungry Homer (Season 12 Episode 15). Since then it has become the go to work for indifference.
Language is not set in stone unless you live in France and speak French which has a dictionary that tell you what words are acceptable and what words aren’t.
LOL is another thing that has become a word. Mostly it is used sarcastically by people who aren’t laughing at all. LOL means laugh out loud and if you aren’t on a keyboard, then you should do the act rather than say the words.
Adulting as in acting like an adult is one that has come into common usaged as in “I have been busy adulting today. I got my bills paid and my laundry done.” I thought this was the sort of behavior that was expected of people over a certain age.
Here's a new one eddiction. As in addicted to social media and one’s electronic tether over face to face social intereaction.
I do occasionally have to ask Caroline what is meant by certain words I hear her use. But the trade off is that she does ask me about words I use or that she reads that she doesn’t understand.
Meme is another one that came out of nowhere and has solidly found its way into conversation. But what meme means seems to vary from person to person. According to the dictionary a meme is “an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by non-genetic means, especially imitation.”
We adjust language to fit our situation. Some of it stays within the lexicon and other words fall by the wayside.
We are dealing with a living language and Caroline will probably be asking her kids what they meant by new words and acronyms.
I am grateful for language that keeps me on my toes.
