RIP Alan Rickman
Jan. 14th, 2016 01:17 pmComing on the heels of David Bowie, this is sad enough. Mr. Rickman was also 69 and also died of cancer.
The first time I ever saw Alan Rickman was on stage. He was playing Valmont in Liaisons Dangereuses. He was mesmerizing to watch. I walked out knowing I had seen a performance I would never forget.
Later the rest of America ‘met’ him as Hans Gruber in Die Hard and a career was launched.
The last time I saw him on stage was in Seminar. He said some line about writers that I was the only one laughing at because you would only really get the joke if you were a writer or wife of a writer. He looked right at me and nodded with a slight smile. He knew I got the joke.
In between those times I saw him in a lot of films and enjoyed each and every performance from those that scared the every loving out of me to those that made me cry to those that made me laugh. I think Galaxy Quest is one of my favorite of his performances.
We talk about actor’s actors and I place him firmly in that category. I learned about acting from just watching his performance. And other actors that he worked with said the same.
There was not much known about his personal life and he made sure to keep it that way. He married Rima Horton in 2012 however they had been together since the 1970s. We know from his friends that he was loyal to the end and was there when they needed him. Sounds like the kind of guy you would want to have dinner with.
My sympathies to his family and friends.
I am grateful that I did get to see Rickman on stage because if you thought he was good on film, he was even better in person.
