After some serious sleep, I feel a little more in sync with my surroundings. I don’t sleep well or deeply when I am in transit. I did sleep on the plane but it was sketchy at best and not very long. So I was in a bit of a hazy yesterday.
We got through customs and quarantine faster than I think I have ever gotten through in other countries. Everyone at the airport was polite and helpful and got people through the process very quickly. We were met at the airport by a member of the company that runs the convention and taken to a car that would take us to the hotel. Our fellow passenger was a nice young man by the name of Dante Bosco who was the voice of Jake Long in Jake Long American Dragon and Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender. He was also Rufio in Hook. We had a fun discussion about comics, animation, and the film industry. He get the O’Shea-David stamp of great guy.
We got to our rooms, did the first sort out the luggage to get some clean clothes as we had been wearing what we had on for over 24 hours straight. After that we went to Meat and Wine Company for lunch where I had a magnificent steak and a good lager.
The Melbourne Aquarium was so in Caroline’s wheelhouse. It is designed with children in mind with lots of information and interactive exhibits. The Emperor Penguin exhibit was worth the price to us. I think we could have spent our entire time there, although I kept flashing on “Happy Feet”. The big tank that they have gives the Atlanta Aquarium a run for its money. The big rays going overhead were so amazing along with the sea turtles and the sharks. Peter and I spent more time there than Caroline did who loved the big tank room. The exhibits were sequential going from the streams to the rivers to the ocean. Caroline took a lot of pictures of all the things she saw. I might do a photo journal for Caroline and one for my photos as we go.
We went back to the hotel because our legs had still not recovered from the long plane ride and made the error of lying down for just a bit. And awoke about four hours later for me and six for Peter. Caroline went to bed and woke up about 3:30 and hasn’t been back to sleep. Peter was up from 3:00 to about 6:00 and is taking a nap right now. I plan to wake him up after I finish posting this.
Today we are going to the local zoo for the afternoon. This evening the convention starts for Peter and we hit the ground running.
And as I type this, Peter just woke up so I guess we will get our second day started.
I am grateful for all the fun we had yesterday and that wonderful steak (not as tender as the traditional Christmas Beef Tenderloin or that Chicago Steakhouse but really close).
