Studio DC: Almost LIve (A review)
Aug. 4th, 2008 09:55 amThis is a project I heard about over two years ago. I saw it on the Disney Schedule and then it vanished only to re-appear on the schedule last night. If you missed it, the Disney Channel is playing it quite a few times over the next couple of days.
Monday August 4th at about 2:00
Tuesday August 5th at 1:55pm; 5:00pm; 8:50pm I think.
These may just be bumpers rather than the whole show but I think the 5 on Tuesday they are airing the whole show.
What is Studio DC: Almost Live? It is the Disney version of the Muppet Show with a lot of the current Disney teen stars mixed in.
That's right, we have Muppets again finally. Well sort of.
Parts of this half hour variety shows showed glimpses of what the Muppet Show was but it was only glimpses. I understand why they did it the way that they did.
The puppets were all rebuilds and I could tell that a couple of them were redone for whatever reason. They looked just a little off to my eye. The voice artists were the ones that have been either doing the voices forever (Gonzo) or they were the handpicked replacement for the character (Kermit) or they took over for someone who wanted to move away from the Muppets and they have been the voice since (Piggy). For the most part the characters sounded like the characters.
But there was something there. If they do another one, I will watch. The sequence with Miss Piggy insisting that she is a Jonas Sister was well done and the costume was just perfect for the bit.
So if you like the Muppets or you like the current crop of fresh faced kids on the Disney Channel, this is the special for you. Not perfect but well worth your time. I think if it goes to series and they have sometime to find their voice, it will harken back to the Muppet Show. First suggestion, let Kermit MC the show and it will work much better.
My current favorite new Muppet sketch is Beaker and The Swedish Chief doing the Habanera on YouTube. Between those and all the new stuff on muppet.com, there seems to be a Muppet renaissance in the works.
I am grateful that I did see this and recorded it. It was nice to see the Muppets again.
