NYCC Saturday impressions
Feb. 25th, 2007 08:37 pmWow. Not as big as San Diego (I can actually get around the exhibit hall in a day) but not a small endeavor either. A lot to look at and a lot to do. It is well run and with the exception of one security guard no hassles for us. (One "rent a warm body for crowd control" is pretty darn good at a venue this size.) It looks like they solved all their problems from last year.
Cool bits of things that happened when I was there and a few things when I was not
Not there for this meeting, but on Friday Peter got to meet and chat with Stephen Colbert who loved his cameo in Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman. Colbert is such a geek but accorded to Peter a really nice guy.
Saturday we awoke early and finished our packing. We got to the Javitts Center about 10 minutes before it was open to the general public so we headed for the green room which became our central location. A number of interesting people walked through the green room which was really neat. A bunch of the Buffy actors were there and since we had done other conventions with them, we caught up on news. They introduced us to a couple of cast members we hadn't met before. Hayden Panettiere (Heroes Cheerleader) and Juliet Landau thought Caroline was so cute and well behaved. (Ms. Landau tried to help Ariel with Caroline's one meltdown because Mommy had to leave the room for a minute. I came back and all was right with the world again). A majority of the cast from a number of Horror movies (The Hills have Eyes 2 and Hostel 2) were there. I ended up chatting with the handlers from the production companies.
On the floor I ran into numerous people I know and met a number that I knew of but never met. I got to chat a bit with China Mieville who is one of my favorite authors and we caught up on things. I hugged Tim Zahn because that was a pass-by and I hope to catch up with him and his lovely wife today. Richard and Wendy Pini were there which is always fun to hang with them. The literary group I belong to had a number of members there. Ran into my old boss from Del Rey and a number of my former co-workers. Over all a lot of people to talk to with some conversations being longer than others.
Last night I took Ariel to see Avenue Q. She enjoyed it. I could see the difference between having puppeteers who are also actors rather than actors who have learned how to operate a puppet.
I am grateful for getting through Saturday sanity intact.
