Narnia Good
Dec. 10th, 2005 10:15 amHappy Birthday Gemmagic & Skydancerlilitu. I hope y'all have a good one.
I saw The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and Wardrobe last night with Ariel. Ariel really liked it. Her favorite characters were Peter and Lucy. The casting director was spot on in their casting of the kids. Solid performances all the way around. Tilda Swinton was wonderful as the White Queen. I had to check IMDB to figure out where I had seen her before. She played Gabriel in Constantine and was the best thing in that film. The talking animals looked great with a few exceptions that looked a little too CGI for my taste. Weta and ILM did a great job creating an army of mythical creatures for the world. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. I still like the book better but they managed to keep most of the visual images the way I had imagined it in my mind. I think it is one of those that needs to be seen on the big screen for some of the scale.
The rain gave way to sun and the puddles were terrible for most of the afternoon. Any place that floods around here was flooded until late afternoon which made driving more of an adventure than it needed to be. The next couple of days is clear and cold and then more snow/rain in the forecast.
It seems that saying "Merry Christmas" has become a strange hot button issue. There are calls for boycotting stores that say "Happy Holidays" in their advertising and stores and then other boycotts for stores that say "Merry Christmas." I have passed a number of churches in New York with signs out front saying "Let's put the Christ back into Christmas" and "Christ is the reason for the season." An alderman on Long Island got bent out of shape when a catholic priest used a religious blessing to bless a Christmas tree in the town square. The priest figured since this was billed as a Christmas tree not a holiday tree, he was not stepping over any lines. The Jews and Muslims who were there weren't offended according to all news reports who sough these people out in the crowd that night. The alderman has since apologized for his behavior. This is all absurd to me. Peter doesn't get bent out of shape if someone says "Merry Christmas" to him and will probably return the phrase. I am not the President's biggest fan but I think it's sad that he and his wife can't send out personal cards and not getting lambasted from all sides. He is getting it from the right that the cards say "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" and that they used a phrase from the old testament rather than the new. The other side is giving them grief about using a bible verse at all in the card. This is the holiday season where a number of religions celebrate different things and it has become a PC mish-mosh and that makes me sad. You can say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Yule" or "Happy Hanukkah" to me I will not be offended. You can even say "Happy Holidays" and I won't take offence.
I am grateful for any Holiday wishes I get.
