Thanksgiving Wednesday 2005
Nov. 23rd, 2005 09:28 amCaroline and I went to "Mommy and Me" and it was picture day. Taking a picture of Caroline can be a crapshoot. The photographer is very good with kids and Caroline's teacher was there to catch her attention. We may have gotten some really good shots. I am hoping so because I am sure that the grandparents would not be adverse to a pretty picture of Caroline. The mothers and the photographer all commented how pretty Caroline looked.
Cold today and most of the leaves have fallen from the trees. We had a really short fall again. I think that is what I hate most about global warming. Spring and Fall seems to be moving into nonexistence. We hop from Cold to Hot without the Warm in between. I miss Autumn and Spring.
Kathleen's Continuing What I am thankful for in no particular order list
1) I am grateful for all the conventions I went to this year. One of the too many to list reasons it is cool to be married to Peter is the conventions he is invited to. We have the regular conventions that feel like getting together with our strange extended family which in order of the calendar are Farpoint, Shoreleave, ComicCon, and DragonCon. Then there are the new conventions we went to and enjoyed like Crescent City Con in New Orleans which was billed as the last one and ended up being rather prophetic considering that the Hurricane hit about 3 weeks later. United Fan Con was a lot of fun. It was a last minute add to the schedule but we are glad we did it. This weekend we have Mid Ohio Con which we are looking forward to.
2) I am grateful for the fans who come to these conventions. It is neat meeting people I have "run into" on the internet and it is always nice to make new friends. This year I met more people that I chatted with online than I had before. The fans really do make the cons. I enjoyed running around with some of the Browncoats (Firefly/Serenity), the Ringers (Lord of the Rings costumers), the Stormtroopers (Star Wars), and the Trekkies/Trekkers (I won't even start to get into that hornets nest). I have had tons of fun with my fellow costumers including the contests. [Funny Story: At Mommy and Me we were discussing the ice show and one of the mothers asked if Caroline had been scared of the large characters when she first went to Disney World. I explained that we had been taking her to science fiction conventions since she was small and she was so use to Klingons and Predators and other aliens walking around she didn't blink twice at a 5-foot Mouse.]
3) I am grateful to the fans online who share their passions with the world. "Serenity" would not have been made and a friend of mine would not have had that additional work if the fans hadn't worked so hard for the series. Fans pulled together and helped their fellow fans in Hurricane ravage areas by doing book drives for those who lost everything. Doesn't sound like much but having a book you love back can be a wonderful thing. I know of a couple of weddings that have come out of fandom and the internet. People who would never had met if they didn't have a passion for a subject and a modem. Use to be that this sort of thing happened in the fanzines groups and at conventions but now west coast and east coast and the middle of the country have a place to meet and talk.
4) I am grateful for any and all movies I have seen or will see this year. There were some goodies this year. 'Green Street Hooligans' is still the best film I have seen this year for artistic and emotional content. 'Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the WereRabbit' so far has best entertaining film I have seen so far. This one was hard because 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' was so much fun. 'Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire' gets best fantasy film so far. 'Serenity' is best science fiction film for me this year. 'Corpse Bride' I enjoyed thoroughly too and can recommend if you like stop motion animation and folktales.
5) I am grateful for all the cool stuff you can collect if you are a fan of something. Action figures aren't just for kids anymore. Want a copy of Harry Potter's wand? Nobel Collection has the official one and this guy over here does a really good copy for about 20 bucks less. Aragorn's Sword? Museum Replicas has you covered. King Arthur's sword? Monty Python and the Holy Grail or the Excalibur edition? Like the Muppets? Disney has got you covered and then some. We as fans are so lucky that we have all these choices of stuff we might want to own.
I am grateful to Fandom as a whole.
