Quality Challenge
Aug. 17th, 2005 09:53 amThere is a feeling of accomplishment when you get a room clean top to bottom and everything put away. I savored this feeling yesterday when I whipped the master bedroom into shape. Clean rooms feel better to me and I can’t really explain why. It didn’t use to be this way but since I have had Caroline my mood towards mess has changed. Not that I am not picking up after her and getting her to help pick up after herself since kids are mess.
There is a feeling of pride when someone compliments your work. I recently did a challenge Doll for a doll group I belong to. The Doll was based on a book called “The Book of Qualities” by J. Ruth Gendler. We gave the challenge leader a number between 1 and 82. She then sent us the quality we were to interpret in doll form. I was given Honor.
Many people would consider Honor a poor man. Of course, there were times when he was fabulously wealthy. For a while he lived in a large house with arches and courtyards and fountains and gardens and olive trees and rare birds. Now he lives in a tiny room with windows on three sides. Honor has a different sense of value than most of us. When Honor was famous, all kinds of people came knocking on the door asking for favors. Since he has met with hard times, many of his old friends are afraid to be seen with him, as if hard times would notice and visit them too. Honor is an old man now. He is becoming more transparent. He walks softly and people do no hear him. Honor's children, impatient with his old fashioned manners, complain about him to their friends. Only his childhood friend Humility has stayed loyal through the long rainy winter.
All the Quality Challenge Dolls
I saw him as a knight who has gone to seed but he has an inner light that has not dimmed. I knitted his cape and the rest of the clothing was made of scraps which all were of royal colors. I built his head in clay and then used rice paper to cover it giving me a hollow head. I put a light into the doll so he would glow from the inside (which is a little hard to see in the picture.) I liked how he came out. Apparently a bunch of people in the group think he's pretty cool too which gives me a nice warm glow inside.
I am grateful I did this challenge.
