Memorial Day Weekend has become the kick-off for the Summer Season. This weekend is when the trendy New Yorkers go out to a time-share on the shore and party party party. It is the invasion of the summer people on Long Island. From now until Labor Day there will be more people clogging up the roads and beaches. Playgrounds that have been practically empty will now fill on weekends with the 3-day visitors or families where the father goes back to the city to work and mom and the kids stay at the beach for the summer. The family scenario doesn’t really happen until school is out which this year is about the end of June. Living on the Island full-time you learn to adjust to these things and people.

I hope these people will take a moment out of their partying and remember those we have lost to war. I know of a couple of families that are going to be missing members of their families this Memorial Day. They went to the Middle East and came back in body bags. They gave their lives for their country. On Monday a number of towns on Long Island will be having parades to honor our war dead. The local high school and/or middle school band will march along with veterans of the various wars we have fought in. Local firehouses will show off their engines and equipment. The police will march too. I hope that the weekenders put down their beers and burgers and do show up to these parades and acknowledge what Memorial Day is all about. But I am not holding my breath.

Today I am going to try to finish up a couple of basic puppets to take to class to show the group what kind of Puppets I make. It will be a race to the finish. Here’s hoping I make it.

I am grateful to all who have given their lives for their country.
