Not Striking
May. 4th, 2005 07:57 amI use to enjoy watching Tom Glavin pitch. He had a wonderful way of playing the corners that annoyed many a batter. A couple of things happened along the way. They changed slightly the strike zone which now favors power pitching rather than precision pitching. Glavin will be the first to tell you that he is not nor has ever been a power pitcher. The strike zone is taller and narrower than before. Also with the new computer system in place that is rating the umpires on how well they call a game, the umpires aren’t giving the corners to the pitchers like they use to. The upshot is that Glavin is walking more batters because of the changes in the strike zone. Which is a shame that his sort of pitching is becoming a relic in baseball for the more “sexy” power pitchers like Pedro.
There is some high-pitched whine outside our house. I think it is connected to some sort of construction work that is going on. It is giving me a headache. I know Caroline can hear it too so it is not my tinnitus acting up. My hearing has always been good. I know when a computer monitor is on or a TV or most electronic devices. There are some stores that I have a hard time going into because of the high pitch whine as you enter the store. I can also tell when a light bulb is about to go. This has served me well over the years but has also made me more susceptible to head aches. Right now my teeth are on edge.
Steroids are being used more by young women trying to achieve the cut muscular look that seems to be popular now. Skinny is still in but skinny with great looking arms is even more in. This leads to short cuts like steroids being used by people who are already having body image problems. They starve themselves and then used steroids to look better/more healthy. There is another study that suggests that skinny as a rail is not the way to go either. Apparently you need at least a little body fat to support body functions when you get older. Female steroid use is starting to catch up with male use and that to me is just scary.
I first learned about steroids in college and figured out pretty fast that it was not a good thing to do. I never did them except under a doctor’s supervision for a medical condition. I could see how others were building up to freaky size and definition but I could also see the toll it was taking on them in other ways. I can remember once being in the weight room at a gym and someone who was a known ‘roid user got mad at some of the equipment. He put a barbell through a mirror and claimed he accidentally dropped it into the mirror. We tended to stay out of his way and that of his friends.
I am grateful I can say honestly to my daughter in the future that I didn’t abuse steriods.
