Slip Sliding Away
Mar. 9th, 2005 08:27 amThe weather yesterday really stunk. It started as a very heavy steady rain. “Oh good! “ I thought, “This will melt the rest of the snow piles.”
On my drive from home to Caroline’s play group, the rain started to turn to ice blobs that broke across my windshield with interesting patterns. By the time I got to Mommy and Me the sleet had turned to heavy snow with a lot of wind. Miss Barbara thought we were going to be the only ones there but the rest of the class showed up. I called Peter and asked him what it was doing around the house. “It’s raining, oh no now it’s snowing,” he told me.
An hour later I belted Caroline in her car seat and started home. It took me about 90 minutes for a ride that it normally 20 to 25 depending on traffic lights. Part of it was that I didn’t take the highway home but when down a major thoroughfare, which the salt and sand trucks had already hit. But another part was driving home at about a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour. Most of the drivers around me were driving with caution and care. The exceptions were in SUVs. I did get the satisfaction of seeing that one idiot, who was weaving through traffic across roads with a layer of snow on top of ice, get pulled over by the police. There was one accident that the police directed us around. I felt sorry for the poor officers in blue who were standing out there in the blizzard. A good portion of the time I could see maybe 2 car lengths in front of me. There were several occasions that I could only see 1/2 a car length ahead. I made it home safely. Peter helped me get a sleeping Caroline in and up to her bed. I took a power nap too.
This morning the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. It is very cold outside. We got our front walk up to village code and I used salt on the front steps which has been turned into a skating rink. I do have rehearsal this afternoon. I plan to get the rest of the aprons done and Ariel’s costume done and in by this afternoon.
They are predicting snow again for Thursday. I am really hoping that this gets all sorted out by Saturday since that is when I have to go into the city for my doll-making course. Spring is just around the corner but I think she is scared to show her face just yet.
I am grateful for getting home safely yesterday.
