Bad Decisions
Dec. 13th, 2004 09:22 amThere is a woman who is in rehab right now. She had to have her face reconstructed and a tracheotomy. She can’t remember things from the morning to the evening. She knows that she was in an accident but can’t remember how the accident happened. She may never be the same person her family and friends knew. Just before Thanksgiving she was hit in the face with a frozen turkey that came crashing through her windshield.
There are four teenagers charged with various crimes for what happened a month ago to the day. One of the kids was the ringleader who threw the turkey and the other three assisted in the tragedy. The turkey thrower apparently took a credit card out of an unlocked car in the parking lot of a movie theater. He and the other proceeded to go on a shopping spree that included Blockbusters and a grocery story. In about an hour they racked up over $400.00 in charges on the stolen credit card. None of the store clerks questioned the signature on the slips or asked for ID if there was no signature on the card.
One of the girls involved said that Turkey Boy had said that this was his mother’s card but she should sign for the stuff since they would accept a woman’s signature on the slip and he didn’t want to spend a lot of time on explanations. She should have known better and probably did but went with the group. She says that she is sorry but it is not her fault that Turkey Boy tossed a 20-pound frozen bird out of a moving car.
I have worked retail. One of the first things they teach you in “Loss Prevention” is that for credit card you check the signature on the back of the card to the one on the slip. If there is no signature you ask for ID with signature. If they refuse you can refuse the card. If they give you problems then call the manager. Look at the name on the card. I don’t know many women named John Smith or men named Joan Collins. No, husbands and wives cannot sign for each other’s cards. Each should have a card with their name on it for the account. Children cannot sign for Mommy or Daddy’s card. They need Mommy or Daddy with them to sign. I don’t care if Mommy is 81 and in nursing home. It is her card and SHE has to sign for it. If she wants you to use the account SHE needs to get a card in your name off of her account. That none of the clerks picked up on the card disturbs me a lot.
Turkey Boy has problems apparently. According to his lawyer, he is a little slow on the uptake. It’s not his fault that he tossed a frozen bird out of a car and changed someone else’s life forever. He managed to get the others to go along with him on the shopping spree very easily. If it weren’t for a security camera in the grocery store that got a good image of these kids, they might still be unknown.
The driver of the car that Turkey Boy was in the back of says that he told him not to toss the bird. He told him several times before it was done. So he of course is sorry but it is not his fault. I can hear what happened in that car. Bunch of teenagers giggling and being silly and Turkey Boy says that he is going to toss the Turkey. The driver tells him not to. More giggling ensues and the turkey is tossed. They were just out having fun but that fun has cost one family and one woman a great price that has no real monetary value.
These kids say that they are sorry. No, I think they are sorry they were caught. I see no true remorse but more passing the buck so they will not get in trouble with the law and their parents. Every apology I have read has come with a “but” attached to it. No of them has taken any responsibility for what they have done. There is always a reason or excuse as to why they have no responsibility for this. They seems more interested in making sure their legal butts are covered so they and/or their parents can’t be sued by the woman and/or her family.
I hope that the stores that participated in this make sure their workers understand how they assisted in this tragedy. I hope the parents make these kids take some responsibility for their actions. I hope the kids someday realize the enormity of what they did and how they are responsible for what happened. I don’t think any of these things are going to happen.
Then there is Victoria Ruvolo. She was the driver of the car who’s life changed in an instant when that turkey flew through her window. She was on her way back from a concert that her neice was singing in. She had an old friend in the car who went with her. Good thing too. If he hadn’t been there to guide the car to the shoulder we might be talking about the death of Victoria Ruvolo and possibly some other people. All because some kids were acting “stupid” .
I don’t know Ms. Ruvolo personally. But I ask your kind thoughts and prayers for her and her family especially this time of year. She is currently in rehab at St. Charles in Port Jefferson on Long Island. She has a long way to go before she is back to normal.
I am grateful that we weren’t in the area when this all happened.
