Yesterday the remnants of Jeanne started to pound the Island with wind and rain. This morning both continued. I know we are seeing nothing like they had in Florida. So far our trees and power lines are up. There was some minor flooding in the usual places. The ground is saturated with water. I also know that I am very damp from dealing with the garbage and recycling today.

The town use to collect paper and plastic once a week for recycling. This year they changed it to plastics one week and paper the next. You can also put out 2 large items for pick up like a mattress and box springs or water damaged bookshelves. The rumor is that these are cost saving measures for the town. Now one week we have more plastic than we know what to do with and the other paper. I like the old system better.

There was an article in today’s paper about a group of people called “Freegans” who go through grocery story and restaurant trash and pull out the uneaten food or the stuff that is at its expiration date. They say this is there political statement and how can these places throw out all this food.

I can give the Freegans a simple answer because the local and federal government have told the owners they have to. These businesses have no choice in the matter. As to food pantries picking up the food, because it is past its expiration date or has been on a steam table all day they are not allowed use it either. I know owners of these establishments who think that the regulations are too strict and they have to budget for waste. They would love to be able to give the food to the poor or use it the next day. If they did and the health inspector came by, they could find themselves shut down due to code violations.

I am toying with the idea of entering a doll in the Costume Con Doll Contest for next year. This would give me a goal to create a costume that I can not do in larger form. It would also give me a goal to get something else done. They would be judging the costume not the doll.

I want to say thanks to everyone for your support yesterday. I really appreciate it. Into every life rain must fall and currently I am in the middle of a hurricane. Peter has been and continues to be very supportive of me. He is one in a million and he is my husband. I fell very lucky to have him in my life.

I am grateful for all the little twigs across the lawn. A pain to pick up but better than large branches or small trees.
