DragonCon Day 4
Sep. 7th, 2004 08:28 amThey left this morning and I miss them. Ariel’s first day of school is today. Usually it is tomorrow but this year they decided to start school the day after Labor Day. They left at 7:00 am this morning for the airport. Security is currently a 30 to 40 minute affair but they have set out in plenty of time I hope. (Update: They made it through security and they currently have a 1/2 hour delay.)
Monday at DragonCon is fun and sad all at the same time. The convention is winding down. You can actually see things in the dealers room and the exhibition hall. Vendors who are buddies of your from way back finally have the time to say hi and do a quick catch up on news. There are a lot of Good Byes and See You Laters too. After the convention is over and you walk through the hotel it can feel like the energy has been sucked out of the hotel. The buzz that is the convention is gone.
Peter had his usual Hour with Peter David panel in the Trek Track. I caught up a little bit with Eric Watts before he had to solve the next problem for the group. We dressed Caroline up in her Captain’s Shirt from original Star Trek. She walked up to Daddy amongst a chorus of Awwwws and wanted to be picked up by Daddy. She then turned to the group a beamed. She can put on a little show when she wants to.
Peter had a panel which was a Tribute to Julie Shwartz. I had a panel on magic and witchcraft in children’s lit. Caroline went with me since Ariel was taking care of some other stuff that needed to be done. The staff at the track and the daughter of one of the audience members kept Caroline amused during the panel.
I found a short cut from the Mariott to the motor lobby of the Hyatt that I am going to see if I can use more often next year. Caroline and I went to say goodbye to Jewel and Matt. Peter caught up with us there. I then went to Fat Matt’s ribshack to get some BBQ for Peter and Ariel to take home. It was packed. i had to circle the block twice before a parking space opened up. Labor Day and Fourth of July are apparently two of their busiest days of the year. I just made it back in time for my Star Wars panel.
Aaron Allston, Mike Stackpole, and I were on a panel about the future of the franchise. We took questions. We speculated. We avoided questions since we are all still under nondisclosure agreement with Lucus Films. It was a fun panel.
And that was the end of DragonCon for me. We went to my parents for dinner and caught up on news with my brother and his wife who were there. We came back to the hotel. Peter and Ariel took Caroline out of the room and let her run around while I packed us up for the trip home and to my parents.
Now I have a few things to pack up. Caroline is still sleeping as I type this. I’ll wait for her to wake up and then we will be off to my parents house for a few days.
I am grateful for Caroline waking up when she did since the alarm clock didn’t.
