RIP August Wilson and Sports Monday

I first met August Wilson when I was pursuing my Master's Degree at Yale. The Piano Lesson was moving from Yale Rep to Broadway. The man had a wicked sense of humor and infinite patience. August Wilson died of cancer yesterday. The theater community at large will miss him. I believe that his contributions to the American Stage will stand the test of time and eventually his name will be said in the same breath as Eugene O'Neil and Tennessee Williams. My condolences go out to his family and friends. He was one of the greats and I am glad I met him.

Does anyone know why the Simpson and Family Guy were showing repeats last night? I think we got 2 new episodes. If they continue to use "spin cam" in The West Wing, they are going to lose me as a viewer. By the end of this past episode I was getting motion sick. Charmed was its usual mindless fun. They have some good set up for the rest of the season.

Jets fans, I feel your pain. It looked so good before the season opened and now it looks so hopeless. It was not all the quarterback. It felt to me like the rest of his team didn't trust him to be the leader which is not a good situation. Giants killed the Rams. Eli Manning is proving to be a chip off the old block if not better than the block itself. So the Buccaneers, the Bengals, and the Colts are the only 3 teams left without a loss.

The Mets stayed above 500 for the season and I am happy. Piazza will be missed but the GM had a call to make for the best of the team. They tried him at first and it was a horror show. He'll find himself some team that will pick him up for a season or two, it just won't be in New York. I wish him luck in his future endeavors.

So the Yankees made it as did the Red Soxs. I think it is good that they are not starting the playoffs playing each other. They are playing some tough teams that worked hard to get where they are so one or both could find themselves spending the rest of the playoffs watching it on TV.

West Ham tied another one and is tied for points with Manchester United. They seem to be holding their own. I hope eventually that some channel in the States will show a match. Some of the other teams I have seen in action on various cable channels but not West Ham.

Basketball starts this week I think. I have more interest in the college games than the NBA games. I still am of the opinion that you can turn into the last 3 minutes of an NBA game and see what you need to see.

I met August Wilson at a cast party in Houston back in the early '90's when "Nat Turner Has Come and Gone" was playing at the Alley Theater. I was very sad to learn that he had died over the weekend. I hadn't even been aware that he was living in Seattle.
