Behind the cut is frank talk about miscarriage and other female issues. I am warning right now for it.

First I would like to talk about what should be called hormone control not birth control. I know someone who advocated back when the pill came out that it should be called hormone control because medically that is what it does. Birth control is a side effect of taking hormone control.

I first went on hormone control because I was having periods that were very hard on me. They were irregular and would show up at the worst time possible. They would just wipe me out and make it hard for me to do what I needed to do. It had nothing to do with birth control because I was not sexually active. It has everything with putting me in control of my body and allowed me to be productive.

Caroline is on hormone control because of the same problems I had at her age. Again she is not sexually active but using it to get her hormones under her control so she could function in school.

But even with all that, it is possible to get pregnant while taking hormone control. There are other medications you can take for other problems that cancel out the birth control side effect. Antibiotics are in this category as I found out the hard way.

Caroline was about two and a half. I went back on hormone control after I had her for a variety of reasons. I got a serious sinus infection and was put on a strong antibiotic to kill it since the previous one had the infection laughing at it.

During that time I became pregnant. I didn’t know I was pregnant until after I found out I was not pregnant.

I thought I was just having a heavy period, which is what miscarriages are a lot of the time. More women miscarry then we know because for many it is just a very heavy period that hurts a lot. According to my OB/GYN, he believed that I had a number of miscarriages before Caroline caught.

I was getting concerned because I was changing my pad every hour and dropping large clots when I went to the bathroom (I did warn for graphic).

I went to see my nurse practitioner at my OB/GYN’s office. She took one look at what was going on and sent me directly to the hospital.

If you are female and in the ER they do a pregnancy test for many cover their ass reasons.

I will never forget when the doctor came in to tell me that I had a positive pregnancy test and I was having a miscarriage. It was emotional whiplash the likes I rarely experience. To know that I had a child growing within me to knowing that the child was no longer a part of me in less than a minute is hard to process.

It still hurts. What could have been. But I also know that a lot of times miscarriage is the way that the body takes care of pregnancy that aren’t viable for whatever reason. There is the logic and the emotion.

The reason for this entry is that more and more states are passing ‘laws’ that regulate what women can do with their bodies. And to add insult to injury, in a number of them if you have a miscarriage, you are investigated to see whether it was a real miscarriage. If they think not, then you can be prosecuted for the miscarriage.

Stop and think about that. You are dealing with what happened to your body and now you have to prove that it was none of your doing but the natural process doing its job. It is hard enough to deal with all the emotions of a miscarriage but now you have to deal with legal ramifications? I honestly see the suicide rate among women going up because of this.

You now know someone who had a serious miscarriage through no fault of her own other than her body deciding it was not viable.

I want people to call the pill what it really is that is hormone control. You know like men have for their hormone problems. Not really any different.

I am grateful for hormone control and how it helps women regulate their own bodies.

I probably know more people who've miscarried than I will ever suspect.

One of the aspects of these particular laws now under discussion that terrifies me is that, in combination with statutes taking voting rights away from convicted felons...these are recipes for even more widespread voter suppression schemes. And, probably a step on the road to making slavery of several kinds legal again in the US...
